A couple of seasons ago I signed a 3B to a 4 year, $4 million/year contract. I didn't need him anymore after the first year so I released him, which put him on waivers, and another team picked him up. I didn't realize I would still be responsible for his contract.

He got picked up, is in AAA now. Would it be possible to trade for him, then put him on outright waivers, and if someone picks him up I wouldn't have to take on his salary?

Any help on how I can get rid of his salary would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Nope. Wouldn't work.

You're screwed.

The lesson? Don't release people.

Kudos to the other owner though for noticing it was a released player and not a waivered one. Sticking it to another team like that is awesome...but sorry about your guy, that sucks

Yes, I learned a lesson the hard way

The easy way would've been to read the help section regarding GM basics.

If he trades for him, wouldn't the split of his contract be re-joined back into a single contract? Then he can waive him?

I thought we had discussed this some time ago. I had submitted a ticket and that was the answer. Let me dig it up.

I'm not certain it works the same way when the player in question isn't signed (as a FA) by the original releasing but is instead claimed off the ww by another team and then dealt back to the original team. I'd suggest sending in a ticket specific to this fact pattern before trying to negotiate a trade for the player.

Agreed. The scenario in the ticket is slightly different from the scenario in the original post. The response in the ticket appears to be specific to that scenario. But then, that could be typical ADMIN-speak.

I'd also suggest sending in a new ticket for clarification.
