What offense should I run? Topic

I have always run the motion, but the team I have this season is different from past teams. All but 2 of the players on the entire are a lot stronger posting up than on the perimeter. Can any one suggest an offense that is more suited to pounding the ball low? The flex, maybe? I need all of the opinions I can get...thanks in advance!

The first thing I see is that you will be recruiting a PG and a SG this season. If you can find a couple of good outside shooting JUCOs or even a couple of promising freshmen, there is no reason to switch from Motion. Motion is not a set position offense. It is more open and flexible and players learn to find the best available open shot on the court. I think that is your best bet.

Otherwise, you could possible switch to Fastbreak I suppose. I would avoid Flex because it needs a balanced inside/outside attack. Triangle might be ok but it needs 1 or 2 strong outside shooters to make it effective including a balanced SF.

It's your call but I don't see any strong reason to tank a season learning new IQs when with just a little creative recruiting you can go with what you have. That's my 2 cents and I'm sure other coaches may have differing opinions.

I would echo Weena's point that it's difficult to change offenses at the start of the season because of the length of time that it takes for IQs to get up to a reasonable level. That being said, I would probably stick with Motion and up the distro from your frontcourt players.

Last time I changed offenses, I just designated five minutes of practice to it the year before to get everyone up to reasonable and then went whole hog the next year. Of course this time, given the players I lost, I just went whole hog and let myself suffer the consequences while building up my IQ's, which are finally getting to the level where its not quite as ugly anymore.

One thing I've done before when switching is to designate the secondary offense to be played when I was winning by a ton to gain practice.

I feel like a broken record, but I will say it again. Only switch O/D if you plan on being at your current school for 3+ seasons. If you want to move up any time soon your best bet is to play whatever your IQ's are the highest in.

There is just simple not a big enough difference in the choices we currently have.

And IMO that is bad advice 4green. If you are planning on doing the switch, start practicing whatever you are switching to ONLY and keep playing the current set until IQ's reach a B/B+

Granted, that was a bit unusual - I had extra minutes at the time and allot of seniors and wanted to try having two offensive sets available and, yes, I gave up on the experiment. Right now I am suffering through the effects of switching offensive sets, but the suffering is finally starting to abate as I have gotten everything up to the C's. Wanted to try something new and this year's team was going to be struggling regardless.

The key to a good offense is a good defense, so run a good defense and BOOM you have an offense. (Sorry couldn't help myself).
