One of these coaches is qualified for the A- Kansas job in Wooden, and the other isn't. (Hint, hint -- I'm the one who's not qualified, so I'm writing this.) I don't understand it, though. I'm not saying the other coach shouldn't be qualified, but I would have thought my resume was better for this current season. Apparently not.

(I apologize for not figuring out how to properly format the information for a forum post, so I'm just posting links.)

Only thing I can figure is that somehow that first year of the four year window is hurting you? That is the only year of his that looks obviously superior, still, I would have thought that last season of yours would have counted more. . .

Full disclosure: I'm a friend of drsnell's in real life, but I can't believe that Niagara's coach would be considered a lock for that job and drsnell wouldn't even be considered after an Elite 8 and a Final 4 in the last few years. Very strange. I was able to jump from Lamar (after an Elite 8 appearance) to an A- Prestige school in Cal with an inferior resume (imo).

I'm not surprised that the Niagara coach was qualified, but I'm very surprised that you weren't. Given the importance of the four-year window, its hard to believe that a Final Four and Elite 8 and an NCOY year weren't enough.

I guess it's his overall experience (150 more career wins).

But I fully agree that you've been much more succesful (both recently and overall) and should have the edge on him for any job opening. That's an unexpected one, to be honest.

I'm with you pdanao -- I think the Niagara coach should be qualified too. But before I got the news that I was not qualified, I was certain that I'd have the edge over him based on my more recent success.

To learn that not only do I not have the edge, I don't even have a chance, was surprising. I'll break it down for those who don't like to click on links. The last four seasons...

Wichita State

40 -- 30-4, Conf Champ, CT Champ, RPI 2, Rank 2, NT Final 4
39 -- 25-6, Conf Champ, RPI 12, Rank 21, NT 2nd Round
38 -- 27-6, Conf Champ, CT Champ, 20 RPI, Ranked #6, NT Elite 8
37 -- 17-11, 71 RPI, Unranked, PI First Round

Niagara

40 -- 27-3, Conf Champ, CT Champ, 31 RPI, Rank 9, NT 1st Round
39 -- 28-4, Conf Champ, CT Champ, 16 RPI, Rank 6, NT Sweet 16
38 -- 24-7, Conf Champ, 30 RPI, Rank 25, NT 2nd Round
37 -- 27-4, Conf Champ, CT Champ, 50 RPI Rank 12, NT 2nd Round

The only thing that makes sense is what a_in_the_b said -- but it's not like I had 3 PI's then a Final Four, I also had an Elite Eight in the last three seasons. It goes against everything that I've read about these situations -- that the more recent years are much more heavily weighted than older ones.

Niagara's biggest advantage is clearly 4 NT appearances. Niagara does have 7 more wins and 9 less losses. Niagara finished ranked all four seasons. Also, Niagara has one more Conference Championship and one more CT Championship than Wichita St.

On the other hand, WSU has 8 NT wins over the four years vs. 4 for Niagara. Niagara's best NT finish was a Sweet 16 and they went out in the first round this year. Wichita St. had an Elite Eight three seasons ago and a Final Four this year. WSU also has a better avg RPI over the four seasons.

Additionally, I had two CCOY's and the NCOY in season 40 -- and Niagara's coach had three CCOY's and the NCOY in season 39.

We both took over our teams in season 35. He started with a C- prestige and finished with a B. I started with a D prestige and now have a B+.

Maybe the baseline prestiges skew that, I don't know. But I don't understand the hiring logic.

I just saw that he's been hired at KU. Oh well. just not many opportunities to coach at my alma mater and I thought I had the perfect storm when I made the Final 4 this year, after two other good seasons.

Am I viewing this too much from my POV? Is the Niagara's coach's resume clearly superior?

Interesting, dalter, I didn't realize that overall experience was a factor. I thought it was just the four year window. (I didn't see your response while I was composing my epic post.) I would have thought my virtual youth would have been in my favor -- you mean HD isn't age-ist like RL? :)

I certainly don't want to bag on Kansas's new coach, by the way. He's clearly a good coach and I hope he does well.
