If I assign a rule 5 draftee to the major league team so he can play spring training games do I still have the option to offer him back before the end of spring training.
Or - is there a way to put him on the spring training squad without assigning him - cant seem to find a way

You can only assign him to the ML team and by so doing he will qualify for ST games. There is no other way to get him in to ST games. You can offer him back at any time, either before ST ends or any time later.
