Is it still possible to sign a kid with just promised minutes + a scholly? Or does it typically require a promised start + a scholly? And is it best to wait until the last cycle to attempt this when the kid may be the most desperate and maybe willing to sign for anything? And does it work on JUCO's as well or just freshmen?

Players no longer even accept promises if you haven't put in some other recruiting effort first.

i know on the last day guys will sign for a call, a scouting visit, and a scholarship. So as little as $260 as long as they're not considering anyone else. But lower than that i cant confirm anything.

It's phone call, promised start and scholly for me at $120. The guaranteed minutes gets rejected quickly or at least until they are considering you.

they accept promised starts

but it won't get them to consider them. It takes a promise start + about 150 dollars worth of calls/letter/coach calls (sometimes less, sometimes more depending on player, and how early you do it in recruiting)

In the potential era, if you are having to sign an emergency guy for 110 you're probably better off taking a walkon.

At least in the previous era if could sign a guy and develop him to be some sort of specialist. In the potential era if he isn't recruited odds are hes completely useless.

thanks guys, I thought I remembered some coaches still signing kids for the bare minimum even though WIS supposedly stopped this from being a possibility. And I understand that such desperate recruiting measures may not be in my team's best interest in the long run, but I wanted to know what it would take in case I felt like I needed/wanted another warm body.

i tried signing a player on the last day with a scouting trip, two calls, two letters, and promised minutes (total of $800), and he refused the minutes twice and decided to go unsigned. Disappointing.

Nice rossett. I just spent $185 on Clifton at Old Dominion in Rupp. I blew $42.5k in a battle for the #13 SG, and only had $186 to work with.

12/6/2009scholarship offer$100
12/6/2009guaranteed minutes - (10)$10
12/6/2009letters - (3)$45
12/6/2009phone calls - (3)$30
Total$185

Can't see his potential, so this might be the only year he sees the court, but at least I'm not going to be running with only 3 guards.

In my experience, at DI you can get guys who are ranked below what you'd normally recruit to consider you for very little.

It's all relative to where a player is "projected" to play versus your Prestige/Division/Conference and how close to the end of recruiting it is.

That player was probably one who "dropped down" some time during recruiting and would have considered you only as a back-up on day one.

I find in the majority of cases players refuse minutes unless they are first considering you these days. Although if you offer minutes to a D3 scrub at UNC I hazard a guess he will accept them...

i get guys to consider me pretty regularly for 110 or 120. maybe its bc i use it on backup options only but i haven't seen it not work lately.
