I just took over Oklahoma this season and am in the process of rebuilding. With five new players and in a tough conference, I don't expect us to win more than 12-15 games this season.

My best player is a SR PG. He is pretty much capped out in all of his key ratings (99 is SPD, ATH, DEF, BH, PASS; 96 in PER). I expect that we'll be better next year as the new players gain experience; however my PG will be gone by then-- essentially being wasted as the best player on a mediocre team.

So, I was wondering if it might have been a good idea to RS him. Sure, his WE would have dropped dramatically (its an 85 now), but given his rating, its not like he was going to improve much anyway. We would definitely be a worse team, but as noted above, its unlikely that we'll make the post-season with him anyway. Now, having him next season would have made a big difference when the rest of the team would be much more competitive around him.

The season has already started, so this ship has sailed, but I was wondering if anyone else had tried this? Also, I was wondering if there might be something built in to stop it (e.g. player might quit the team rather than RS).

Thoughts?

well this might not be too helpful since im in just my 4th season as a DIII coach in wooden, but when i took over my program in my first year in HD i had two senior pgs who were probably two of my top 3 or 4 players. i redshirtted the worse of the two and though his work ethic dropped BIG TIME his other ratings remained stagnant. needless to say i started him the next year and he was a huge part of my team, as i barely experienced any drop-off at the position and my wins leaped. so success story for myself, and if it werent too late and you seriously figured this season was a wash i probably wouldve advised you to go for it.

Great idea. I learn something every day.

sounds reasonable to me...too bad your window is closed...

Well, if you thought you were unlikely to make post-season anyway, then his quitting the team would have you in exactly the same position you would have been in had he just played and graduated: A year with no post-season followed by a year where he had graduated and you had the money to recruit a replacement. SO the fact that he might leave would eb irrelevant to the choice, only your evaluation of the current year's prospects.

I woulda put it on him and if he woulda dropped but stayed above 20 I woulda it on him.
