Can I redshirt a freshman that I just signed even if I didn't let him know while recruiting? I seem a little overloaded at SG and it would help balance out my classes.

You can try. If you made him a promise, you can no longer RS him. If you didn't promise him anything, you can try to RS and see how he reacts and what the corresponding we drop is (if any).

I didn't promise him anything. Will his WE take a big hit?

It's possible that he'll be fine with it and it will take no hit, and it's possible that he'll be ****** and it'll take a hit, anywhere from minor all the way down to 1. You won't know until you put the RS on him. If he takes just a minor we hit, it's usually worth keeping the RS on. If he takes a major hit that is going to mess with his ability to improve, it's usually not.

Should I redshirt this SG under the following scenario? I have already done it, but I wonder if I should undo it. I already have two good SGs that are Juniors, so this one would barely play this year, and I felt like that extra year of eligibility would help me down the road. This year though, I am actually winning a lot of games by a lot, and he might play more than I expected, as he would be my 4th string at SG. Plus, this year I only have one senior, so this would mean in the future I would have two graduate in this class to balance the class. Plus, he's not all that great. He's not supposed to have high improvement except in speed, athleticism, stamina and durability. I felt like if he got mad and transferred it would not be a huge loss. With this in mind, what are everyone's opinions on this. His WE went from 27 to 12 when I redshirted him. One more thing I was thinking is that I would rather not have him play much, because the rest of my team seems pretty good. I'd just like to get a couple of opinions. Reputation went from A+ to A- when I did this. If I undo it, will it go back up? Thanks for the advice in advance.

Your rep went down when you redshirted him? That would have to be because you promised him minutes, otherwise your rep would not have gone down.

First, you should not promise minutes to someone unless you have the time for them. You had four guards ahead of him, you had to know he would not really be playng.

Second, in general, you want to avoid situations where a guy's we drops below 20 or so. If he had been a 57 we and dropped to a 42, , that would be worth keeping the RS on for. But going from a 27 to a 12 will greatly impact his rate of development, so I wouldn't be OK w. that result. (That's separate and apart from promises, etc.)

If you don't like the recruit (i.e. you think signing him was a mistake) and want to get rid of him, then keep the RS on. If you want him to be a member of your team for the next 3+ seasons, then you have no choice but to remove the RS.

Thanks for the advice. Actually I misspoke - it was the loyalty that went down. I had not promised him minutes. He'll be a decent player, just not a superstar or anything in my opinion. I think I may remove the redshirt.
