Minor League Rosters..How many? Topic

How many guys do you carry on your minor league rosters?

Alot of people carry a max number. This is probably the best strategy as your pitchers get fatigued pretty quickly. I usually start with 14 pitchers on my rosters and add as they get tired through training camp pitchers. I feel that I save a little money that way.

Carry 15 pitchers (at least 6 with starter stamina/durability), 3 catchers, 7 corner infielder-outfielders, and 6 middle infield/centerfield. Everything else is overkill (and I probably am the most guilty on that) and you will be covered depth wise with these 31 players.

I think eeyore is probably on the right track. I'll add that you might want more pitchers at the lower levels, and maybe you can get by with 13-14 at AAA.

Also, keep an eye on Durability. If you've got position players with DU in the 50s or 60's, they'll need frequent rest, so a platoon might be in order.

I rarely carry more than 28-29 players per level and rarely have any issues with pitcher fatigue. Position player fatigue is more common but I don't really care if a guy hitting .189 in High A is tired (even if he is the team's leading hitter).

5 starters are needed in the pitching rotation. One starter in reserve in case of injuries and as a long reliever in a pinch. 6 relievers active, 3 in reserve, as Sparky does tend to work his favorites. 3 catchers splitting the catching roles and one lineup's DH role. Third basemen can play all the corner spots (1b, 3b, lf, rf), rightfielders can play lf and 1b, etc. 6 on the roster, one in reserve in case of injuries. Shortstops can play all the middle positions (ss, 2b, cf), and 2b and cf are very similar (except no ies at 2b). 5 on the roster, one in reserve. I try to keep all players at 100%. Any platooning at positions will be determined by the talent you have.

Dittos on emphasizing higher skill position players. Ideally, I wouldn't carry a 1B or DH on a minor league roster unless he has legit ML potential. For inactive hitters, it's nice to have a career MiL MIF and another warm body on Inactive plus a couple of spare catchers organization-wide if you don't carry 3 C's per team.

15 pitchers per team minimum, with 12-13 active. Watch out for low Durability/Stamina pitchers. A 60/9 reliever won't get you an inning per appearance and more than one of these in your pen will exhaust the rest. If you've inherited a bunch of these, add more inning eaters to the mix.

Good question and good thread. I like to save as much money in the minors as I can while still putting competitive teams on the field.

I usually just have 2 C's, plus 1 extra system-wide in case of an injury.

If you favor SP's over RP's in your drafts, you can cut down the number of pitchers you have to carry by a few.

Everyone has what works for them, and what they are comfortable with. I like having an extra piece to swap in without having to promote, etc. If I find a position player who can call a game and catch (with a PC number over 30), that is an option also for C depth.
