Arbitration/FA question Topic

I have a guy eligible for arbitration (3'rd year of Arbitration), asking more than I want to pay him. I'm certain I can release him and sign him for less as a FA. My question is, if I release him, do I have the option of offering him a FA contract before he hits the open market? If so, will he likely ask for a lower amount per year for several years, or will I need to let him hit the open market and wait for his price to drop. Thanks in advance.

he should ask for whatever his LT demands to avoid arb were.
