UPTEMPO (part II) Topic

I know their was a long discussion about how HD uses the term UPTEMPO and SLOWTEMPO in HD world. I just want to get the record staight for coaching on HD world.

-How to be a successful coach on tempo of play?

- To be successful in going uptempo do you need High STA, more ATH, SPD,REB and IQ in going against your opponet or does it really not matter?

- For slow down, Is it more successful being an underdog against your opponet or does it not matter?

Tempo has absouletly nothing to do with how fast your team runs or how slow they walk. It only dictates how much time your team uses in the shot clock before they shoot.

But its important to also keep in mind that shorter shot clock usage results in more possessions and theoretically more times running up and down the court (so stamina matters).

That has nothing to do with the speed of your team running up and down the court, IE if your team is fast that doesn't mean you should run uptempo so your team runs up and down the court, that is not what tempo means.

okay im getting it a little bit. Does it matter if you are the superior team or an underdog to use the right tempo to the fullest advantage? Or does it really not even matter now days? IE, if your team sucks and is young, would running uptempo have the same results as running slow tempo?

If you are the better team many coaches use uptempo as it gives more possessions and with more possessions the better team should come out on top more often then not.

more possessions is just like more repetitions of an experiement - toss a coin once, who knows....toss a coin 1000 times you should get close to 50% heads

once in stats class I learned about markov chains ... I know this is elementary for some, but I found it enlightening.....where you model events based on repetitions of events with known or estimated probabilities.

a contest that is modelled by a long markov chain will usually lead to the favorites winning most of the time - take tennis as the example, if you take the scoring system of tennis and play until someone wins 3 sets, then if one player has a 55% chance of winning each point that player will win almost all the matches.....because there are so many points

on the other hand, an event with a small number of events can be a lot more random in terms of who wins - think about the old slowdown basketball games before the shot clock......imagine a game with two or three possessions - who knows who will win.....

so, more possessions ....everything else equal....means the favorite should win more.....SUBJECT to stuff like depth and fatigue etc

correct on the depth issue. Often a team with a weaker bench (but a superior starting 5) may opt for slowdown as it should keep their starters on the court for a few extra minutes a game. Thus, maximizing their superior starting 5.
