Conflicting recruit responses Topic

I send a call to a player and he says this: "Hey coach, honestly, Truman St. is a fallback option for me at this stage. Just being honest - honestly. Keep in touch. Seriously. Do it..do it."

I do some scouting trips and offer a scholarship the next cycle and get this response: "Hey Coach, I'm going to be honest with you - the only reason I haven't said no to your offer is because your secretary sounds pretty hot." Which in my experience means I have no chance. He is considering another school, does this mean they have put in so much effor that I might as well just give up now? Or since he gave me the backup message do I still have a chance to get him?

I also would like to know about this from the more experienced coaches: does the backup message mean you can get a guy?

In the past I've never had a problem getting a guy once I got the backup message, but I've never had the conflicting responses like this. I was ready to blow my budget on this particular recruit now I don't know if I should even put another dime into him.

One thing to be aware of is that players respond to recruiting efforts in the order they get them. For example, say you and another coach both sent calls, letters, and 2 evals but the other coach also made a scholarship offer and sent a couple of HVs. If the player got your responses first, he might say you were a backup but then consider the other school after getting their offers. I once had a player tell me that he was really struggling between my school and another school but he signed with me the same cycle.

As far as where you are right now, the real key is do you have enough cash, prestige, distance advantage to beat the school he is considering? I would probably look elsewhere but it's your call.

Well, the recruit was already considering that school when I sent the phone call. I am thinking I should look elsewhere, but I'm taking over a new school, and he's the type of recruit that could be a "program changer." It's hard for me to just let him get away.

You can sign him. All that means is he is responding to a scholarship message and is undecided/not considering you. Whenever that happens it will be "only reason I have not said no is because...." or "If I had to I'd say no, but good thing I don't have to give an answer now." etc. Take messages with a grain of salt.

I would agree with this 100%.

Grain of salt, eh? What about these two:

"Me thinky Franklin Pierce stinky." -- I was hoping for the "I'll keep you as a backup message" but got the stinky instead. Should I have been able to pursue him since I got some kind of response, even though it was unfavorable? I bailed immediately after finding out how stinky I was.

What about this one: "Too late. I thought you would have heard by now I signed with someone else" -- why would I get this note? I invested $120 into a player, figured out that I would lose a battle, was never under consideration... but the a-hole decides to rub my face in it after he signs the contract? Why? Stupid.

The stinky message, means no chance.

I am guessing that in the $120 was a scholarship offer. Anytime that you have a scholly offer on the table, even if he is not considering you when he signs, he will let you know.

Hmmm. Thanks for the input. Do you believe in miracles is no shot, but don't hold your breath is the green light. I love this game! I certainly don't simply take these messages with a grain of salt. I have to try and dissect the hidden meanings. Its like a poetry class. LOL.

It makes sense now that I would get the snobbish reject letter. A real treat every time. Thanks for sharing.
