Right left batting splits Topic

I have a C I'm considering bringing up to play against ys only. here's the player:

I thought since he only had a 8 righty batting split, he'd be useless against right handed pitching. But, looking back at his splits over the last three years, he coonsistently hits for better average against RH pitching.

Season 4 - .328 v. RH and .236 v. LH

Season 3 - .311 v. RH and .250 v. LH

Season 2 - .355 v. RH and .333 v. LH

Am i interpreting this rating catagory correctly? This guy should suck against rightys, right?

Minor league stats are useless. However, he bats y so his VR might play out a little better than expected.

Then I can expect him to be useless against right handed ML pitching?

I would. Like I said, he hits y so, since righties have lower splits vs. ies, it might play a bit higher than what you see. But an 8 isn't going to be a 48.

Just me...I wouldnt want him on my ML team. ie pitchers usually have higher VL than their VR so a 48 isn't going to be real effective against LHP. 8 is too low to be really effective against RHP. As Mike pointed out, righties are usually lower in VL so he might get away with a little, but again an 8 won't be a 48.

I wouldn't look for much from him as a hitter, but if he can hold his own, he has plenty of value because of his defense ratings. He could have a spot on one of my teams rosters and probably play regularly against ies if I had offense in other positions.

I look for guys like that. Play vs LH, late inning D.

I love this guy as half a catching platoon (the LH half) and defensive replacement.

generally i like the guy in my platoon who plays against ies to be right handed himself

why? it's about the ratings. Ratings say guy can sorta hit LH pitching, who cares what side of the plater he hits from?

Because the opposing pitcher (who is LH) will generally have a better vsL than vsR, often by a wide margin. Thus as a y playing only against LHP, you'll always be going against the pitcher's better split, which will reduce your effectiveness.

I'm assuming soxfan didn't read my first two posts in this thread.

Maybe he decided they were too long, and thus stopped reading them.

Perhaps. But I couldn't have been more efficient.

I'd say that's fair.
