How bad will this SS hit? Topic

Recent draft, 18 yr old defensive specialist projects to:

Con:13 Pwr:50 vL:24 vR:80 Eye:29 Spd/BR: 75/74

I'm thinking if I was ever bold/stupid enough to play him everyday he should hit around .250 / .280 / .375.

I'm having a hard time finding comps in my leagues. Anyone think he'll do significantly better/worse? (For those wondering why I even ask, his glove projects to 91 / 95 / 96 / 100 - 20M HS Scouting)

He'll hit bad enough to make baby Jesus cry. Think sub-Mendoza Line. Platoon him against righties only and he won't be too much of an embarassing #9 hitter.

A SS like that with his glove could be in every day. Depends on if you have other weak hitting in your lineup.

if he's a 90/90/90/90 defense type i'd play him vs. righties. he'll stink, but it's hard to find a guy who can field SS and hit his way out of a paper bag.

I'd play him FT if he could. I'll take a SS that can field regardless of how he hits.

Yep, that's the one position I'd go defense all the way.

Instead of starting a new thread about this, I will just post my question on here. I am thinking about signing a FA SS, and his offensive numbers are...66/35/62/36/66. Which, doesn't seem completely helpless. His defensive numbers are 87/80/93/86.

I was wondering if I should go with this guy even though his glove is below 85 or should I go with this guy.
Offensive numbers - 36/33/76/48/33
Defensive - 87/89/85/84

I am leaning towards the first...but I would appreciate any help.

I think you're probably relatively close.

Different World, Park, etc. obviously, but Don Watkins, the RH half of my SS platoon in Major Leagues, has 34 contact, 46 power, 21 vLH, 49 vRH, and 26 eye and he's gone .251/.284/.377 over 605 AB (in the middle of his 2nd ML season now).

The other half of the platoon - William Koh - has 46 contact, 34 power, 58 vLH, 23 vRH, and 33 eye and he's gone .222/.268/.281 in 1322 AB.

Thanks for the feedback guys - and especially the comps zbrent - exactly what I was looking for.

Dawgbot - I'd go with the second guy. I suspect he'll save enough errors over the 1st guy to justify a slightly lower OBP. If one has significantly better speed/baserunning, though, I'd probably go with that.

The second one actually has higher speed/baserunning. Thank you for the help.

does he bat RH or LH

To answer the original question, he would hit terribly. However, I think most people would overlook that and take him for his defense and batting him in the 8th/9th spot depending on AL/NL. He'd basically be Adam Everett, maybe slightly better fielding. ~ .970-.980 FI%, batting .215-.230 BA

I love guys like the one mentioned in the OP ... shortstops with both a glove and that can hit are crazy expensive ... where guys like that are "cheap"

I like to have one like him and one that is the same with a good vLH instead of vRH and platoon them ... I sacrifice the bat(s) at SS to have a solid defender starting everyday, plus a solid glove on the bench for defensive replacements and short term injury fill-ins

note that I only tend to keep them in the majors until their Arb2 year ... I like those guys for the minimum, but not for $4M

on the first guy, my experience says he won't hit very well ... guys with a bunch of "OK" hitting ratings (in the 60s) tend to underwhelm ... I'd rather have a rating or 2 in the 80s, with others in the 40s, than a guy with 60s across the board ... just my 2 cents

Both hit reasonably well for the quality of their D. I like the 1st guy. 80 Glove is 5 points below recs, but he exceeds recs by 7 points in Range, 8 in AS, and 1 in AA. Sub-rec glove could lead to a few more errors than you'd like, but with great range/arm I'd also look for a high number of +plays.
