I just drafted William Vogelsong 7th overall. He projects to 29/98 Sta/Dur. How many 2-inning appearances per year could you get out of that combo?

If he were LH, SIMMY would use him for 85 appearances/100 innings per season. Since he's RH, you'll probably get 75 appearances and 90 innings in the SuA role, 7th inning, 20 pitches, 3 pull.

3 pull is a waste for a RP.

Btw, RH or LH you can get 100 innings. Depends what role you use him in.

I'm really wondering how many inning he could possibly go, if I tried to max him out. Obviously, with lots of good options out of the 'pen, he'll get less use. But I'm wondering if that Sta/Dur combo could possibly get me by with an 11-man staff, with 5 SP (I have a couple of high sta/dur prospects), 2 LR, 3 Su (including Vogelsong) and a closer. i'd probably need to get 140+ innings from Vogelsong to do that, but I wonder whether he could handle that kind of load.

I've got 133IP out of a 32/96 RP. 84 appearances.

I used him as a setup B, 6th IP. 1 pull rating. He could have gone more, but I had another really good RP I used as a setup A , (8th) who ended up with 102 IP.

I put everyone else in long B to ensure these guys were used whenever the game was remotely close, but if you have other good RP, that might not be the best idea.

Also, in the national league, he may get pich hit for, which will limit his innings a bit, but probably inflate his appearances.

Having a guy like that is key to going with an 11 man staff.

you could get 175 innings out of him easily.

Not unless he has a terrific rotation. That could limit his use.

Can't see his projections, but if he was deserving of being the 7th OVR pick, he should be talented as well. I agree with schedule, 175 shouldn't be too hard if you try and max him. The 29 Sta (so, for me, 25 or 30 max PC) will get him through 2 innings the vast majority of the time, with some 3-inning outing tossed in. The 98 Dur will allow him to pitch very very often - if I had to guess, at 25 MPC, he could easily see 100 games, so 200+ IP isn't out of the question based on his Dur/Sta and effectiveness.

Thanks guys. Just for informational purposes, at 18 scouting he projects to 83 OVR with the following projections:

ctr/vsL/vsR/vel/GbFb/P1/P2/P3

100/88/89/48/88/89/79/57, so yes, he's going to be utterly filthy.

I had gone to my limit to sign a BL-ready IFA SP, so I had to go "very conservative" with my draft. Under normal circumstances there were a couple of other guys I might have ranked higher who would have required over-slot bonuses.

An interesting corollary - what would a guy with extremely high (90+) stamina with incredibly low (<10) durability be able to manage. I have seen lots of 50-70 STA, 10-20 DUR guys in LRA or SetupA, but with a stamina of 92 and a dur of 9, how many innings could you get, and in what role?
2/17/2010 4:24 PM
I'd let a 90/9 guy with great stuff close for me on a 10/20 pitch count, and hope he could throw 100 games at 1.1 IP per for 125-140 innings. In the playoffs, I'd look at just starting him in game 3 of a 5-game set.

Followup to my original question: What about using my guy (lets say eventually he tops out at 28/96) as a one-man starting rotation, on a 20/20 pitch count, 100% rest, and 4 pull, with my "rotation" all listed in LR/mop with any-inning avail and starters' pitch counts? 140 starts at 1 1/2 innings apiece for 210 innings depending on effectiveness?
2/17/2010 4:38 PM
if he were on 100% rest, he'd still start if he were tired in a one-man rotation.

35/73 - 125IP last season and 123IP two seasons ago...he could easily pitch 10-15 more inning if I streched him.
