ODL - Explain Yourself Topic

As usual, a thread for anyone who so desires to explain the method behind their madness. I'll get it started

Big Hair Big Shots

1. 05-06 Chauncey Billups - 7.1 mil
2. 01-02 Paul Pierce - 7.7 mil
3. 76-77 Bill Walton - 6.8 mil
4. 87-88 Danny Ainge - 4.9 mil
5. 72-73 Randy Denton - 5.1 mil
6. 03-04 Erick Dampier - 5.8 mil
7. 07-08 Desmond Mason - 2.5 mil

Well, overall I had an idea - could I build a good uptempo team around backcourt guys with what I thought to be unique skill sets early, and then still replicate a solid front court by scrounging short-minute big men? This is the result of those efforts. I started with Billups and Pierce, two guys who together are capable of doing a whole lot of different things - about 400 threes combined, well over 80% FT and over 1100 attempted, 80 and 90 def, plenty of assists without too many turnovers, and even some decent rebounds from Pierce. Plus, not overly expensive (less than 15 mil combined for about 6200 minutes).

The frontcourt would be the difficult part. I identified a group of guys with solid rebounding/scoring/efficiency that I thought I would be able to get, judging on previous ODL results. I grabbed Walton for his do-it-all best season - over 30% Dreb, good efficient scoring, assists, and blocks, but only 2100 minutes or so. Denton was another guy who was able to provide solid scoring in short minutes (albeit not as heavily low post as I would have liked) with 10/26 rebounding percentages. And if you're wondering about the team name - you know all about Walton's crazy hairstyles, but Denton's fro was out of this world (google image search!). Dampier doesn't score as much, but he's the guy who will crash the boards (15/24). None of them foul too much or turn it over too much, but I would have preferred to get a little higher usage; it just isn't there.

Ainge kicks in a very efficient and cheap 3000 minutes, adding a good amount of threes, good assists and low turnovers. Don't give up too many points, Danny! Mason was the last piece of the perimeter rotation: little bit of rebounds, not many turnovers or fouls, little bit extra midrange/post scoring.

I built the team I wanted to; now we see if it works. SIMMatchup results have been a little disappointing, so there's a good chance this doesn't work out at all. Still worth a try, though!

Okay I'll give it a whirl.

1) 89-90 Magic Johnson - $8,293,638
2) 07-08 Marcus Camby - $6,710,025
3) 89-90 Reggie Miller - $5,557,483
4) 08-09 Antawn Jamison - $7,547,889
5) 68-69 Willis Reed - $7,987,051
6) 82-83 Mike Gminski - $2,439,210
7) 96-97 Brooks Thompson - $1,509,705

This was a new adventure for me since I haven't built a team around a PG in anything like this version of the sim. Overall I wanted a squad that could take advantage of running with Magic. They don't foul too much (except for Reed, as scud has observed) or turn the ball over too much (except for Magic, but that comes with the territory). They shoot a modest number of 3s (571) compared to the current OL trends, but should get to the line a lot (2232 FTM). They should hold their own on the boards most nights.

I started with Magic (maybe a tad high at #5, but past a certain point it becomes a matter of taste) to make sure the assists had a strong foundation. This version of him doesn't rebound as well as some others but does provide threes and decent scoring.

Camby might have been available in the next round but I wanted an affordable rebounder and shotblocker who didn't make a lot of mistakes (in the sim anyway). He shoots a low percentage, but then again he doesn't shoot a lot.

Miller seemed like the right complement to the first two: very efficient shooting, some threes and a lot of FTs, a bit of passing and not much else, all for $5.6 mil. Never used him before but I'm crossing my fingers.

Jamison's value is well known in this sim patch - a PF whose rebounds and threes look nice at the SF spot.

I'm flirting with high usage by taking Reed to complete the starting lineup. His rebounding percentages (11.1 and 25.1) ease my anxiety in this department, he's a strong enough defender, and he fills the scoring gap created by Camby's presence. scud's saying this spot should've gone to a lower-usage guy who enhances the strengths of the first four...time will tell if I ran the train off the tracks with this pick.

Gminski and Thompson were pretty unremarkable and totally utilitarian picks. One gives me offensive rebounds and blocks off the bench, the other shoots some threes and passes enough to back up Magic. Neither will set the world on edge.

Don't know what to expect from this team, but hopefully they'll be fun to watch. They're beating some of the mega-rebounding, avalanche-of-threes OL cookies in SimMatchup, but I've been burned in the past by trying to read anything into those results.

Started off with the a goal of 4k FTAs. Needed Buck Williams or Connie Hawkins to fall to me in the 3rd round though. When that didn't work out I thought I should grab some flexibility. I took Frazier for two reasons.... position flexibility and low sal/minute option if I decide not to use him.

Round 1 I took Dwight Howard. Used him a few seasons back and hoped to pair him with Chris Paul (back then) but with the new player release at the time, Paul went in round 1 as well. But Howard performed well and gives a decent foundation to work with.

Round 2 many will see Manu Ginobili as a reach this early... and I wouldn't disagree in some ways. But knowing he would not be there when I picked again at 61, I grabbed him early.

Round 3 was a pleasant surprise.... Dirk Nowitzki fell pretty far this go 'round. I can recall several past seasons where I wish he fell this far! Not sure he is the right guy to pair with Howard but I'll try and figure it out as I go.

Round 4 UG. Walt Frazier. This was a choke pick if there ever was one. I am using his 239k season and thats where I'll leave it.

Round 5 I went with Spencer Haywood. not liking the pick but not terribly disappointed either. I should be in good shape rebounding wise so hopefully and he won't hurt that much.

Round 6 I grabbed my starting PG, Brad Davis. Funny thing though.... I wanted to pick Damon Jones but posted him as ncih's pick instead. I had to rework that pick on his squad as well. I think he got the better team out of it! Funny how that works. Further, this pick was supposed to have been Kevin Porter. When i loaded my spreadsheet I reversed them in the depth chart and posted the wrong guy...again.

I also grabbed Neil Johnston to help with the boards. Considered using him as a starter as well and I still may. We'll have to see how it shakes out.

1982-83 Brad Davis
2007-08 Manu Ginobili
1972-73 Spencer Haywood
2004-05 Dirk Nowitzki
2007-08 Dwight Howard
1978-79 Walt Frazier
1951-52 Neil Johnston

I know scud feels I overdrafted usage but as currently planned I have about 10.5k total possessions.... within 50 of last year's squad that had the most wins in the league. Don't get me wrong, I do not plan on repeating that feat this year but I may stumble into the playoffs if I get a good divisional draw.

My drafted output (per game) based on per minute stats and expected minutes played:

129.9 PPG
26.5 Assists (blech)
52.5 Rebs
8 steals
17 TOs (if only they mattered!)
6 blks
20 fouls
42 FTAs

I will not meet these numbers but it is essentially what I drafted. EFG% is above 52% but lack of assists make it a bit lower.

**** Poor Draft For Me (all in all). But my record indicates a pattern that says its a pretty average effort.

Team Name: Nuthin' Special (cuz that's what this team is)

Round 1 - Jerry Lucas. I haven't used him in ages.. no idea what to expect out of him. 21.9 ppg, 19 rpg, 3 apg...

Round 2 - Mailman. Didn't really want to pick him but had no idea who else to take. Using his 31 ppg 11 rpg 56% fg season.

Round 3 - Pippen. Bad pick. Too expensive, not enough boards and minutes. The start of the end was here, I think.

Round 4 - T Brandon. Never used him before. Probably should've picked someone w/ more minutes who could also play the 2.

Round 5 - Sleepy Floyd. Needed more assists and like his high % from the line. Over 500 FTAs.

Round 6 - Bullard and Tarpley - minute eaters.

Strengths: Assists up the yin-yang and about 80% FT whatever that's worth... not much else.

Weaknesses: Outside of Lucas, not a whole lot of rebounding. Think this team is gonna get crushed on the boards, that's my biggest fear. Also, low minutes for a couple starters (34 and 31) with a bunch of sorry *** scrubs coming off the bench.

Everyone I picked except for Bullard is either new to me or I haven't used them in about 2 years... Pippen is best in 47 mil leagues, not 42. This team will probably miss the playoffs by about 6 or 7 games.

EDIT: This team is getting a makeover now.....
*changed to a much cheaper Lucas so I could draft a more expensive Tarpley in the hopes of more boards.. but ash is right, Tarpley fouls like crazy. still have the crappy backcourt scrubs taking a lot of minutes, too. I loathe this team, never, ever again am I drafting Terrell Brandon..

**just about Brandon - his minutes r very short - only 31 per game for the version I want. I didn't check that before I drafted my bench. I would've taken a small rather than Tarpley and Bullard. I'm sure Brandon has his upside but if you want to use his 81 or 85 D seasons (top 2 money seasons), you need to supplement with other guards.

Overall self-assessment of draft: C-

Electric Ladyland

1. 88-89 Michael Jordan - SG - $10,964,331
2. 99-00 Gary Payton - PG - $9,378,710
3. 88-89 Robert Parish - PF - $7,537,032
4. 07-08 Emeka Okafor - C - $6,658,533
5. 06-07 Mike Miller - SF - $4,556,602
6. 73-74 Roger Brown - Scrub#1 - $854,831
7. 96-97 Henry James - Scrub#2 - $391,618

i love this team.......if we played 36 min games...anytime you say to yourself, "man i really hope no one steals henry james from me" you know your struggling with minutes.....jordans 88-89 season was the whole reason i drafted him and same goes for paytons 99-00 season...i was too stubborn to accept lower salary seasons...maybe next odl i will learn to not spend all the cash on the first two picks....as a result im going to have to scrap for mins and rely on the likes of danny ferry and casey jacobsen...ouch

my starting 5 however.....gonna be tough to beat...as scud said in his evals...my backcourt is nasty....they do it all and either one(or both even) can slap a 35 12 and 5 on you any night....ill have the advantage of having payton d up magic, paul, stockton and the other big time pgs while cooking nash, barros and the other poor defense pgs....same goes for jordan...ill have him on the mcgradys and wades...while getting to beat up on those no d gunners

the rest of the starters fit in nicely around them....miller teams with payton to give me 2 500 3pt guys on the per....while okafor and parish are 57/64 54/67 fg%/pnt% guys...so a nice inside outside scoring balance while jordan just dunks on everyone...all three are around 20% usage which i liked....theyll get theres while allowing the backcourt to remain the focus...all 5 guys rebound and miller helps with dimes...solid d(95 90 88 78 49)

pretty happy with the results.....the bench is going to kill me....but jordan and payton should be top 10 mvp candidates and hopefully carry me to the playoffs

pg-Buse

sg-Mullin

sf-Bird

pf-Nater

c-daugherty

Bench

pg/sg- L. Wood

sg/sf- d. ellis

rd 1 I like sf's that rebound. 3pt's & fg % are a bonus. Bird fits the bill nicely. It seems like he has been hot in the sim lately.

rd 2 Nater Decided that by taking the 16 rpg Nater I could afford to go with a moderate rebounding center later and didn't have to worry about rebounding guards. Also gave me 2 players with 50%+ fg which seems like is becoming more of a value in the sim.

rd 3 I have had mullin in like 3 straight years now and done quite well. What's not to like? Another 50% shooter, a handful of 3's, over 500 fta's and decent rebounds and assists, all for under 6M. Yippee!

rd 4 Well Buse fits here with good assist/to ratio, low fouls and a handful of 3's. Not the most assists for high minutes, but a good fit with Bird and Mullin cranking out some assists from their positions. I also like his 80 defense from the point and 4 spg.

rd 5 A lot of people question Daugherty, including myself. However, the last championship I won had Daugherty at C and he just kept delivering. Keep looking for reasons not to like him and only slightly below avg rebounding for a C and marginal defense scar his otherwise steller stats. Plus, I figured I'd pick up a few wins I probably shouldn't because of 4 starters with well over 50% fg, will be hard to beat on some hot shooting nights!

Bench

Dale Ellis- 3's and 10ppg, nice bench guy

Leon Wood- 3's and great assist/per min.

Never done this before, but here we go...

1. '92-'93 The Dream - $10,998,869

One of my all-time favorite players who I have never really toyed with in the SIM. His OREB % isn't spectacular from the 5 - but I love his blocks, usage, steals, and FT%. He hacks some heads, but I think getting Hakeem at 22nd was a steal.

2. '05-06 Steve Nash - $6,205,042

The cookie cutter PG. Wanted to use his 06-07 season, but need the minutes from 05-06. We all know what Nash provides - ridic AST% and EFG + solid usage from the 1. He turns the ball over a bit, but he takes care of my dimes on his own, and his 50 D rating isn't crippling. He also wouldn't harm a fly, and I needed low foul% after bringing in Hakeem and his 3.7/game.

3. '69-'70 Red Robbins - $7,686,988

Gotta be honest - never heard of this cat until I started SIM balling. Actually, didn't even know of his work until he started popping up in draft leagues and OL squads - and helping those teams win. He complements the Dream well down low. I needed another 10+ OREB% guy, he doesn't turn the ball over, his 86 'D' rating is respectable, and his low usage means he theoretically shouldn't be taking fade aways from Hakeem. I'm excited to see how he works out - he is basically '91-92 Willis with lower usage.

4. '94-'95 Clyde the Glyde - $6,621,980

Another of my favorite ballers of the '90s. Clyde is a nice complimentary scorer in this SIM - I chose this lower minute season because of the higher number of 3's, low TOs for a wing player, and his easy to manage usage. Also like his 6 boards/game and 1.8 rips/game. Low minutes kind of blows, but he more than makes up for it with his stat filling in the other categories.

5. '95-'96 Grandmama - $5,995,214

LJ is a defensive nightmare. We all know this. However, I can play him at the 3 and get decent numbers on the glass, from the line, and behind the arc. His 22.9% usage fills out my starting five nicely, and as I mentioned when I picked him, defensive rating really doesn't hinder a player nearly as much as it should in this version of the SIM.

6. '02-'03 Erick Strickland - $1,813,035

Love his work in this season. Enough minutes to spell Nash and Clyde, nice AST%, good # of bench treys, and 50+ EFG. He doesn't tend to throw the ball in the crowd, which is also a nice feature I like from my backup combo guard.

7. '08-'09 Mikki Moore - $776,685

Kind of a throw away pick. Hated it after I made it. Prob. should've snagged Govan so I could use those minutes. I'm actually not even sure if I will use this season yet. His usage blows, and he really doesn't have anything outstanding outside of a solid EFG. Mediocre boards. Ugh.

Overall, I like this team. The Moore pick ****** me off - but I have nice balance inside/outside, good totals in both boards/dimes, and the Dream should be a top-5 MVP candidate with this supporting cast. I'm a little short in FTAs and minutes, but I should be able to survive.

Good luck, peoples.
2/19/2010 9:19 PM
I have already talked extensively about my team, but I'm waiting on roommate to get home to go do some sh*t, so might as well talk about it some more.

Round One: 87-88 Charles Barkley - $8,690,263

a) He's my favorite player of all-time.
b) He's one of a very select few that score 60%+ from the paint, and he makes 60% of his field goals while doing it.
c) He'll get to the line a ton and, unlike Shaq, make a good many of them.
d) He gives me tons of offensive boards and a few on the other end, too.

I always go nuts trying to decide between this season, 88-89 (better on boards) and 89-90 (better fg%). I chose this one for this team for two reasons: 1) It worked last time and 2) I needed the possessions.

Round Two: 72-73 Artis Gilmore - $10,113,702

The closer the 2nd round got to me, the more I believed I could do this. 56% efg% - but that'll turn into 60%+ with KJ and running up-tempo. He doesn't actually turn the ball over that much when you look at the minutes he plays. I'll live with it, though, since he'll give me close to 20 points a game with 60% shooting. Not quite Wilt when it comes to free throws, but he'll get to the line a bit. He'll block a few shots, and oh yeah, he has 12%/28% oreb%/dreb%. He fouls a lot, and that makes it really hard to get 102% of his RL minutes, but I'll do what I can.

Round Three: 96-97 Kevin Johnson - $5,689,117

At this point, I'm debating, do I pick Reggie Miller from my old squad or KJ. I don't believe either makes it back to me, and since there are more guys like Reggie than KJ in the sim, I went KJ. Another deciding factor for me was the fact that KJ was an all-time favorite player of mine.

What's to like? 30%+ ast%. 22.6% usg%. 54%+ efg%. Gets to the line a lot and makes a high percentage there. He'll give me around 100 threes as well. And this is his best turnover season, too. Still a 16% tov%, though. His defense is below what I like to use, and he only plays 2600 minutes, but hey, he only costs $5.6 million bucks, which is definitely a concern when you've spent almost $19-million on 1st two rounds.

Round Four: 02-03 Michael Redd - $4,614,431

Redd was my 6th man on my previous team, and he was incredible. He'll start this time, though. He gives me a ton of threes, has a usage over 22.1%, a must with the rest of my starting line-up already in place (in my head, at least), and one of the lowest tov% in the history of the game (6.5%). Important when you look at Barkley, Gilmore and KJ. He doesn't get to the line as much as I'd like, and he's a little expensive for 2300 minutes, but synergizes well with the rest of my starters. He gives me decent boards (4%/13%) from the 2.

Round Five: 07-08 Jason Richardson - $5,994,052

And this is my new 6th man. Has a nice usage (26%), so whether Redd or Barkley is off the floor, he'll pick up the slack and keep me from hitting the penalty. 200+s threes at over 40% make... 52%+ efg%, low tov% (9%). Gets decent boards for a 2, has a nice 11% ast% to help KJ. Doesn't get to the line as much as Reggie, though, and was more expensive (and fouls more), so that kept me from getting the 8th man I wanted. But anybody that can do a through-the-legs dunk, I'm a fan of.

Round Six(a): 08-09 Matt Bonner - $3,338,059

This is the 2nd difference from my previous team (I used 95-96 Chuck Person). What are the differences? Well, for starters, Bonner has an even higher efg% (over 60%) and even lower tov% (6.something%). He gets as many boards on both ends (5%/16%) and fouls about the same. I lose a couple of points on defense, that's all, and almost no assists are lost. He does not, however, get to the line as much nor does he make the sheer volume of threes the rifleman did. He also plays 200 less minutes. But with J-Rich on the squad, neither of those are an issue. With him in the starting line-up, all three members of my frontcourt will shoot an efg% of 60% or higher, which I dig in clutch situations (since the sim plays your starters at the end of the game).

Round Six(b): 03-04 Charlie Ward - $2,229,468

I almost went a different way here, too, but I decided to stick with him for several reasons. Most importantly, he makes the list of my all-time favorite players. Secondly, he gives me good efg% (51%), ast% (23%) and about 100 threes. He also plays good defense and can swing 100% at SG for the excess minutes (him and KJ x 1.02 will be more than 3936, but not much more). He gets me some steals, too. He also gets me some fouls, which sucks, but at this point, can't be too picky.

This me just enough to get 5 scrubs to flesh out my line-up. That I didn't care for, as I had a particular guy in mind for my 8th man, but J-Rich costs 800k more than Reggie, so it didn't work out.

All-in-all, I have respectable on-the-floor numbers (sum of advanced stat * minute% for each player, then multiplied times five):

usage: 110.8%
efg%: 55.44% (before ast% and up-tempo applied)
oreb%: 35.07%
dreb%: 83.55%
ast%: 63.83%
stl%: 7.85%
blk%: 7.75%
defensive rating: 60.81

and here's the bad: 13.03% tov% (which means it'll actually end up being over 15%) and 19.92 fouls per 48 minutes.

Those last two numbers can mean a 7-game playoff series can go very badly for me.
2/19/2010 9:56 PM
1. Moses Malone. Went with the experts' consensus #1. Lots to like.
2. Grant Hill. Originally planned on taking a PG here, but a run on the great ones and the availability of GH, who gets plenty of dimes (23.5 Ast%) at SF, made this an easy pick.
3. Brandon Roy. Wanted a good passer (18.1 Ast%) with some range (17 Per%, 83 3PM) and low TOs (1.9 pg) at SG.
4. Mike Bibby. Needed outside shooting (43 Per%, 167 3PM) with low TOs (1.6 pg).
5. Theo Ratliff. Might have blown this rushed pick. Wanted to compensate for Malone's poor blocking with TR (5.7 Blk%) but his boards are too low (8.2% and 17.5%) and usage too high (17.5%) to work optimally with the starting 4 (combined usage: 101.4% w/out TR).
6. Brent Barry. Surprised this Barry was still around. Might even start him with his deadly outside range (57 Per%, 63 eFG%).
7. Jeff Foster. Needed to platoon at PF with stronger glass cleaner (14.4% and 23.1%) who didn't need the ball so much (11.6 usage%).

Guards: Bibby, Roy, B Barry
SF: G Hill
PF/C: M Malone, Ratliff, J Foster

Nice to be listed as a powerhouse by ash, but I'm not so confident. Bombed my last 2 leagues.
2/20/2010 1:14 PM
Mike James 1
McGrady 2
Garnett 3
Cage 4
Boerwinkle 5

i've never started garnett at the 3 before. this will be experimental. i wanna force the action with tmac, so i'll play him at the 2. so, cage has to start at pf. he is also an unknown starter to me. kenny smith backs up james and tmac.

this is the good thing theme leagues do for me. my teams and their machinations often deliver me a slice of the twilight zone.
