anyone ever have a pitcher with pretty good ratings everywhere else but with a velo at a 1 or 2? any ideas how he would perform assuming 70's splits, 90 and 75 P1 and P2 and good control, etc.

it's like a slow pitch softball speed!

ive always equated velocity with strikeouts, so i would assume he would get very few strikeouts. whether or not your guy's ERA would differ from that of another pitcher with a higher velocity and similar ratings across the board, im not sure.

Gregory Smith

Lance Nelson

Are the closest I could find; both had reasonably productive years with velocity in the low 20s, and their other ratings weren't even that spectacular.

I would certainly take a chance on a guy with 70 splits, 90 P1 and 75 P2 and good control. I'd imagine his strikeouts would be depressed, but the other ratings are good so he'll still strike some guys out and won't walk many guys or give up too many home runs.

I'd be willing to bet that a guy with 80 control, 70s splits and 90/75 P1/P2 could post a sub 4 era even with a velocity of 1.

I've never seen any basis to assume velocity impacts results directly.

Ks, sure... but that's also based heavily on pitch quality.

My guess is slightly fewer Ks, and more pulled balls in play, but otherwise, I'd mostly assume he'd behave like any other pitcher with comparable ratings in the other "red" categories.

I'd expect him to perform very well.

and his K/9 the last three years haven't even been that low: 6.88, 5.93, 6.26

I think Jamie Moyer has a velocity of 1.

Greg Maddux was never a "fire baller" but always seemed to put up solid strikeout numbers. As did Mike Mussina especially later in his career.

maddux had an average ML fastball but made up for it in movement...

Maddux, imho, would have been a player with 70s on 5 pitches, and 95-100 on splits.

I'm not sure I ever look at velocity (or GB), except as a tie-breaker for RPs, since coming into a tough spot and getting a K (or GIDP) can be better than other types of outs.

I look at velocity to mean how many balls are going to be put into play. Obviously, if he isn't striking people out the ball must be put into play. So if you have a solid defensive team then low velocity is fine, but if your defense is suspect then stay away from the low velocity pitcher.

i think maddux's control would be in the neighborhood of 99 too.

Danny Ray Herrera of the Reds would be the guy with velocity of 1

His fastball clocks in at 84 mph, with a 68 mph change-up.
