Moving up to DI Topic

Would you rather move up to a school with a C prestige currently that has a D baseline prestige, or a school with a D prestige currently that has a C baseline prestige?

How can you tell what schools baseline prestiges are?

Hannibal, the choice really comes down to how good the teams are today and what you think you'll be able to do with them in the next few seasons.

If it'll take a couple of years to rebuild and make the postseason I'd take the baseline C team. The D baseline prestige team would come down if you missed the postseason for a few years. But on the C baseline prestige team, you won't go down much more if at all and when you do have a good season or two you'll come up farther, quicker.

The tradeoff is that it'll be a little harder to recruit at the team with the current D prestige.

If each team is good enough to win now or next season I'd just take the team currently at C as I assume neither of these is your dream job and you'll be looking to move on again in the next few years.

Just to add to what cheeznsweet said. I just a C prestige school with a baseline of D because my success or lack of (two NT bids in four seasons) me with a C prestige. That success with a C baseline school leaves you in the C+ or maybe B- range. I also believe with potential (your first season) you should be able to recruit two star and one star guys who have good core potential leaving you with more like three and two star guys.

It also has alot to do with the conference. That overachieving D school is likely in a low conference and unless it gets full, the conference performance will help drag it down to it's D baseline.

Thanks for the input. I did end up going for the school with the current C prestige (Wagner), for the following reasons:

  1. In his FAQ thread, lostmyth2 answered my question about moving up from DII to DI. One of the things he mentioned was taking over a team previously coached by a human.

  2. Another piece of advice from lostmyth2 was to be in an area with a lot of DI recruits. The locations of the other teams I was considering was probably fine (TX, FL) but I knew that NYC would be a good location.

  3. The final thing I took away from lostmyth2's advice was not to take over a doormat; if a new coach takes a D prestige program it will drop to D-.

  4. The conference (the NEC in Naismith) is relatively full with only 4 sims. Also the conference prestige last season was C-. So I think that mitigates your point doomey.

  5. Having never recruited in DI before I thought I would need the immediate boost from the current prestige.

A new coach will not necessarily decrease the prestige of the program he took over. If his resume is good enough he will improve it. For example, UTEP improved from D to D+ when I took them over.

I will keep that in mind next time.
