Another bad firing Topic

fussyd got the shaft at Missouri in Knight last night. Here's a guy who took over a C- prestige program in season 12 and built it up to a B+ at one point. He had a run of eight straight winning seasons before this year, where he broke that streak due to a rebuilding year. And for THAT he gets fired?!

Attention, upper brass at WIS: Either make firings consistent or don't have them.

I have no opinion on whether it was right or wrong, but I think the key was the absence of a trip to the Dance or even the PIT....a series of barely winning seasons like that would take one down a notch each time so that I bet he was in jeopardy prior to the most recent season. Then, that knocked him over.

That is how it works, for good or ill

Seems very consistent to me, and I've been fired a number of times in D-I! A Big 12 team will have to make the NT or at least the PI once every 5 years or you are gone.

I had Missouri in Tark once and built the team up from D prestige to about .500 in 5 seasons and was fired. They were pre-season top 25 the next year with my recruits, but I never got to see that first good class through. No post-season killed me.

I dont see a problem with it. He had 6 straight seasons of no post-season. Just having a slightly winning record does not cut it at Big 6 schools.

This seems about status quo, I could understand an argument for it if he got fire after the first 5 bad seasons but he turned it around make the NT got a good prestige and then wet the bed.

Looks reasonable to me...Not near good enough for Mizzou.

maybe fussyd was driving drunk or caught in a jiggly room!

Who cares?
3/25/2010 5:45 PM
I don't get this at all I think he should definitely be fired after that. Who cares if he was at a B+ at one point he just capped off 5 straight non-post season finishes with a 6 win season.

82-85 in the last 6 years at a Big 12 school that isn't Nebraska/Baylor/Colorado is going to get you fired.

38-58 in conference....averaging 6-10 isn't very good, drop down to a low level school and let someone else have a shot.

do you get a season at "in Jeopardy" before you are fired or can you get fired from "boosters complaining"
3/26/2010 8:38 AM
It seems that the firings are much nicer to coaches who take over C prestige schools in the Big 12 and never improve.

I remember trex in smith was at texas in smith for like 10 seasons and complete garbage.

Yet coaches who turned it around, then go back into the tank get fired.

Let's face it, I sucked at Mizzou.

I have to say that I was a little surprised when I got the email telling me I had been fired, but I don't have a problem with it. I just couldn't get that team up to a consistently decent level during the last few seasons.
3/26/2010 11:47 AM
seems about right to me. but i agree things are not consistent enough. i think at the Dukes and Uconn and Kentuckys, there should be a very short fuse.. two straight years out of NT and you are done. four years without a sw16 and you are done or something like that.

i think that would make for a nice riskreward... the duke-ish squads have a big prestige advantage... make them earn it.

i think WIS should do something to promote a little bit of turnover....whether thru firings or forced retirement in a world. it seems impossible to get a shot at ones "dream job" because a coach has a stranglehold on it.

how bout this idea: after, say, 30 seasons in 1 world, you "retire" from that world and would have to start over with a new ID or they put a (2) next to your ID and you start fresh from DIII.

It would put coaching records on a somewhat level playing field because you cant rack up wins just because of longevity and it would also give others a shot at the Kentucky's, Duke's, and in my case Indiana's of WIS.
