So what am I doing wrong? Topic

Frustrated to the point of posting. If anybody would indulge me with observations and/or advice I’d appreciate it.And it’s a super-long post so if you simply want to mock me for going into this much detail, I’m pretty cool with that too.

For several seasons, I have had a good, not great, Division 3 team in Allen at Thomas. I thought coming into this season that I had a shot at being great. The kind of team that could put together a Final Four run with a bit of luck.My team by a decent margin is the best that I’ve put together in the potential era.So naturally, I’m having my worst season in a long time. And I really have no explanation as to why it’s happening.Take out the Sim AI teams and I’m a .500 team.(Or to be precise, 7-6.)And I’m having a hard time figuring out how I am that bad.Head-to-head I would seem to have an advantage over most my opponents. But when the ball tips I’m as likely to lose as win.

Below is my game-by-game analysis of my losses. The numbers I quote are from today which obviously is a bit off since my loss in game 2 had different ratings then than today. But I think the differences are small and should not prevent a look back on things.

When I list things below , the plus ratings are in my favor. And when I list total skills, I’m excluding the ratings for work ethic, stamina, and durability.(I’m not even bothering listing durability at all.)

I’ve been consistent my game planning this season.(Which might be a problem.)I’ve been running an umptempo flex offense and on the defensive side a press / 2-3 zone combo with a +1 setting. My thought has been that I should run a pretty neutral defense since my team is “better” than my opposition.(Turns out that we aren’t better, but going into the games I thought I was.)

Maybe I’m just super unlucky but the number of losses makes that somewhat unlikely.Four of the six losses are pretty bad. I’m pretty sure I’m doing something wrong here so if anybody could offer thoughts, I’d sure appreciate it.

LOSS #1:York(flex, press / 2-3 zone (-3))

ATH: +1

SPD: +6

REB: +9

DEF: +1

BLK: +13

LP:+3

PER: -6

BH: +3

PAS: +3

WE: 0

STA: -2

Total Skill: +32

Comments: York played a combo defense but had F IQ’s in the zone.Didn’t really matter though as York only committed 11 fouls while Thomas committed 21.York shot lights out and walked away with the win.

LOSS #2:Blackburn(fastbreak, press (-1))

ATH: +9

SPD: +17

REB: +10

DEF: +3

BLK: +12

LP:-5

PER: -3

BH: +7

PAS: +3

WE: -10

STA: -6

Total Skill: +53

Comments: Blackburn only has 5 upperclassmen so the good work ethic hasn’t yet led to terrific IQ.Also a good stamina advantage that I think was mostly negated by the fastbreak/press.(My starters set to fairly fresh played more.)Blackburn’s defense ended up being much stronger than Thomas’.Blackburn’s press caused 22 turnovers and on the other end shot lights out against the zone.

LOSS #3:St. Mary’s (motion (uptempo), press (+1))

ATH: -4

SPD: +3

REB: -5

DEF: +15

BLK: +9

LP:+2

PER: -12

BH: +3

PAS: +2

WE: +2

STA: -3

Total Skill: +13

Comments: St. Mary’s is probably the best program in D3 Allen and might have the best team this season. The 23 point loss was rather predictable. You don’t see teams that have that kind of athleticism, speed, and rebounding. No complaints about this loss.

LOSS #4: Millikin(triangle (uptempo), 2-3 zone (0))

ATH: +13

SPD: +13

REB: +4

DEF: -7

BLK: +13

LP:-1

PER: -8

BH: +4

PAS: -2

WE: -2

STA: 0

Total Skill: +29

Comments: Ugly 15 point loss. Was outshot, outrebounded, committed more turnovers and more fouls.

LOSS #5:Maine Maritime Academy(triangle (slowdown), man-to-man (-3))

ATH: +14

SPD: +14

REB: +6

DEF: -15

BLK: +15

LP:-3

PER: 0

BH: +6

PAS: -1

WE: +6

STA: +4

Total Skill: +36

Comments: Uglier 16 point loss. Was outshot, outrebounded, committed more turnovers and more fouls like in loss #4.Also had less blocks. And by outshot, this time it was 56% to 39%.

LOSS #6:Castleton State(fastbreak, press(0))

ATH: +2

SPD: +7

REB: +9

DEF: -17

BLK: +14

LP:+5

PER: -9

BH: +2

PAS: +1

WE: -2

STA: 0

Total Skill: +14

Comments: No real complaints here either.Castleton probably has the best combination of athleticism, speed, and defense in the D3 world. That their press did a number on me isn’t much of a surprise.Close overtime loss and my strengths showed up just as much as Castleton’s did.

Are you just doing total aggregate rating, or are you adjusting for things like redshirts that aren't playing or roster players who are basically mopups?

The other thing that frustrates me is that I'm 99% sure I have the best team shot blocking ratings in all of D3 and I have one of the best groups of athleticism/speed in post players. But I'm not even close to being on the top 25 list of blocks per game despite running umptempo every game.

Guessing the zone is killing me there although I have to admit I didn't realize that was a problem with the zone defense.

First off, its not like your team is terrible, you have lost to good teams so your not unerperforming by a huge amount.

I think you have two problems.

1) your team has great ath/spd but is a weaker rebounding team (only two guys >70) so i am not sure why you would play zone at all. Zone seems to be going against your teams strength. You have pretty good press IQ's so I would just put 25 mins into the press, abandon the zone, and run a full court press

2) You only have one guy who shoots 3's. Even though your teams PER isnt great (one guy above 35) I am assuming that your other players are set to -2. I would set your other perimeter players at 0. I have found that a PER of 35 is good enough to shoot 3's at div 3 if your ath/spd is high enough, which for your guys it is. I think your offensive efficiency would improve by having your other guards outside of Martino shoot 3's

KU, here's my breakdown of your team:
1. You're grabbing 57% of available rebounds, which is great.
2. You're getting to the FT line on a higher percentage of your shots than your opponents. But, your opponents are shooting slightly better FT%, which hurts.
3. You're turning it over on 22% of possessions, your opponents are turning it over on 23%. That's not a big discrepancy, so too many turnovers.
4. It looks like you've played a tough schedule and have just gotten sorta unlucky.

Orr is getting the most minutes but is the least efficient on offense (.94 points per individual possession compared to 1.05 PPP for your team as a whole). Doesn't look like you're giving him much distro, which is good.

Martino and Hern are getting plenty of touches, but could get a lot more. 1.19 and 1.15 PPP respectively, much higher than Orr, for example. They scream "give me the ball!"

Martino needs to take more 3's, Orr needs to take fewer. Looks like you have your PF Shnake taking 3's too. Hmm...

Overall, I'd say you'll probably win the rest of your games if you play the same difficulty of teams. Just got unlucky in some tough matchups.

Jayhawk,

We've played a couple of times over the seasons, I think we're 1-1 against each other. I made the Sweet 16 the last couple of seasons and was ranked 3rd at one point. This year I'm up at Shephard in the WVIAC of D11. (On a side note, I played Beached Whale in Non-Con this year.) While at Nazareth I played a Motion/Press, and after looking at your roster, I can answer your first question in one word, (Ardoin). He's your best Low Post player and you have him on the bench. While at Narareth I played a 10 man rotation, (like UNLV back in '90/'91 who wiped the floor with Duke and went 34/0 or something like that) and substituted at Fairly Fresh, not a first string and second string. You have the wrong guys in the wrong postions. You need to get Ardoin in on the first string. I would start Beals at Center, with Hern as his backup, Ardoin at PF, with Durr as his backup, Collins at SF (he has a better Def/LP/&Per than Schnakenberg), with Schnakenberg as his backup, Martino at SG, with Minton as his backup, and Orr at PG, with Rayes as his backup.

The next thing I would do is slow down your Tempo to normal, you'll cut down on all those turnovers and fouls. I think the UpTempo is hurting you.

After that I would go with a Full Court Press D (I set mine at 22 minutes) and get rid of the Zone. You have the players to do it and your Defensive Ratings for Press are slightly better than for Zone, so you won't be sacraficing anything.

Then with all those extra practice minutes, put them to good use.

Under the Player Game Plan Under 3pt shooting, I would have Martino at 0, Minton/Orr/Washington at -1, and everybody else at -2.

With a 27 RPI and a 10 SOS, you're sitting pretty sweet for NT play, don't worry about it. What you need to do now is focus on getting your rotation set properly and get them comfortable with it before Conference Tourny Time. So start now while you still have time to do it.

For me, the way I look at things, you only have really 2 things that I see as limitations to your play so far. One is Perimeter, like the other guy mentioned, you need to work on that for your SG's next season, and the thing I see as maybe the biggest thing hurting you this season, your team Height. You have 7 PFs and Centers and only 3 of them have size.

For What It's Worth,

Court
