Free agents with future contracts Topic

What if a player is on the waiver wire, but is a free agent/unassigned status. I know this year you only pick up a small portion of his salary, but what happens for future years salary?

i think if you pick him off waivers, you assume the rest of the years on that contract, meaning you're paying them in full. if you wait until he clears waivers and lands in the free agent pool, you'd only pay whatever it is you sign him for.

if that's not right someone correct me because ive never encountered the situation before. that's just my (hopefully correct) understanding of how it works.

Sounds like he was released. You'll pay $327K for the length of his contract.

If you pick him up on waivers, you're responsible for the entire contract. He's not a freeagent until he clears waivers.

Assuming he clears waivers and becomes a free agent, any team that signs him is only responsible for the league minimum (327K per year for MLB contracts). If you're inseason now, the current year's salary is prorated.

The remainder of the contract is paid by the original team.

An example of such a player is:

Stu Boehringer

If he's on the WW and is a free agent, he's been released. If you claim him, you're only on the hook for league minimum for the remainder of his contract.
