What am I doing wrong when trying to negotiate a contract with a free agent and I get the following message:

(Error: A minor league contract will default to 1 year for the player's minimum required salary. No bonuses are acceptable.)

I'm not offering him bonus money but when I try to offer more than he's asking or try to add multiple years, I get that message.

You can't change the amount on a minor league salary.

...and you can't sign a minor league contract for multiple seasons, either.

So his asking price is all that can offered and basically the player then decides which franchise he wants to play for? Also, if I read the rules correctly, signing a free agent affects your position in the amateur draft?

Yes on Q1. Well you could offer him a major league contract or a minor league with a spring training invite.

Only for Major League players and only if the player has a message that he is a type A or B free agent..
