If you promised a guy a start, I know you no longer have to start him after the regular season. Is there a number of games he has to start during the regular season to keep him from transfering? If he started 1/2 the games, would he transfer? 3/4?

There's no set rule; it depends on the player. Many coaches shoot for 80%, though

I shoot for 100% until the CT.

Glad tkimble asked this because this was on my mind as well lol. Its ironic because I face tkimble's Roanoke team in an exhib in 2 days.

80% used to be a high confidence answer

it is said that they then tightened the expectations so that there is risk at levels like 80 85 90 %

What if he gets 90% of starts in the first semester, but then is academically ineligible the second semester? Would he transfer because he didn't get enough starts, or would he stay because he got 90% when he was playing?

P.S. I wouldn't actually do this because it would be counter productive for me.

Stop it. Your hypothetical ? is making my head hurt!*

* I'm now wondering about catastrophic injuries and how they may affect promised starts.

Promises only apply to games that someone plays in. So if you promised 10 minutes and he plays only 14 games but averages 15 mpg, you're fine. Ditto with starts. You won't get penalized for a player going ineligible or getting hurt to the point where he can't play.

Also, if he is injured but can still play, he will expect to start.
