I was curious if you guys could check out my first game in Naismith? Opponent shot 14 of 26 from beyond the arc with terrible PER and ATH rating. I ran a 2/3 -1, looking back I should have pushed up of course.

Understanding that I had a huge advantage in my guards with ATH, SPD, BH, and Pass (which of course didn't seem to matter), did playing a -1 force me to lose that game?

I've always been a subscriber to the idea that the +/- only does so much and can't swing a ton of points one way or the other (between 1 or 2 settings, obviously a +5 will be way different than -5)

Without seeing the actual box score to know how much you lost by, I would say that he would have had a good shooting game even if you were a +1, maybe not 14 3s but he still would have hit a bunch. If his team was terrible at PER then you wouldn't have thought to go + anyway especially in the first game without much info to go off of.

I have seen plenty of times a team goes +2 and still has 3's drained on them, just like if you go -2 the center can still dominate you inside. The +/- setting can only control so much.

On second thought looking over the box score, the fact that you only lost by 9 and it was OT, that slight change to the setting MIGHT have made a difference.

His team's PER wasn't terrible, but I probably would have gone the same route and played a -1 like you did, 1st games of the season can be hard to game plan for.

He just got hot from 3p range, which happens sometimes when you're playing a 2-3. Based on his ratings and iq's, if you guys played 10 more times I'd be pretty surprised if he could replicate that 3p effort even once.

Looking over his roster, I would have run a slightly minus zone also. I think you just had a bad roll of the RNG dice in that game.

lostmyth i believe feels that a + 2 is the normal setting for an average 3 pt shooting squad

Yeah, I read that, and immediately set my zone to +2, but after 8 or 9 games I found I was losing way too many rebounds compared to any improved 3pt defense. I put it back to 0, sometimes +1.

Of course, the sample size, my little experience, and terrible DIII teams don't make it a good comparison at all. He knows what he's doing, so I'll try it again in the future.
