Why to run the Zone defense? Topic

I picked up a team that runs the zone and found out a few things...
1. I don't know how to game plan running the Zone.
2. The zone doesn't remotely fatigue the team and barely uses 9 players.

In theory you could easily run with a 10-11 man squad at all times since the last 3 guys play ~3m each. Is a ~10% bump in recruiting $ a viable reason to run the zone?

In theory you could get an extra scholarships' worth of cash and beat the press by out spending during recruiting. I have seen many a vet throw away the last scholarship or two in favor of going all in on 1-2 key recruits. It seems that the zone just makes this a safer bet.

Yes, but the press is magic.

I run the zone and it's mainly because it allows me to play uptempo and not worry about my lesser stamina guys. They can rest on zone, plus in my case (d2 tark) most average teams seem to be one dimensional. You'll have your occasional teams that can both hit in and out but the majority is one or the other. If that's the case the zone works out pretty well because you can key in on one target.

Along with scholarships, I usually take 1 walk on a season so I have more money for my "key" recruits.

I always plan on going on with 2 walkons unless I knwo I can get impact players. I would rather have the 15K/recruit next season than a guy sitting on my bench for 4 years complaing about not playing

i run a half court press / 2-3 zone nearly exclusively. i think one key is where the default defensive setting for a m2m or press is 0, you want to run a 2-3 zone at something like +2 as a base setting.

i typically look for good rebounders (even for guards it tends to help). you also want your guards to be fast to defend the perimeter; although DEF rating is still important, shot blocking is actually equally if not more important for your bigs.

sitemail me if want more in depth detail.

This is an exceptional strategy, I'd almost rather the game have only 10 slots and not 12, again because there is SO MUCH griping from players in HD...much more so than in any other cbb/cfb game I've ever played.

This is a rather ironic statement.......

I like the zone, especially at the low-to-mid D1 level where you don't necessarily have the big defensive ratings to run M2M or the ATH/speed to run press. With good rebounding, a zone can be very tough.

do you mean griping from the imaginary players or griping from the humans who play the game?
