I've been debating whether or not to continue taking on walk-on players every season in order to get an extra $6000 every season to recruit with. While I won't get the extra over money (usually low anyway), I will highly increase my chances of getting each recruit I go after, especially if I have even classes(3-3-3-3 or if I do this 3-3-3-2). What do you think about this strategy and have you ever tried it before?

Absolutely; especially since it allows you to spend more money on current recruits (dollars/schollie you are trying to fill). In certain cases I would even take 2 walk-ons if it meant getting a top-flight recruit.

And I was thinking I was the first to develop this genius strategy. Thanks though, I think I'll probably start using this strategy and see how it works.

You can do this....but just watch out for injuries or academically inelegibility really killing you.

Yeah the other problem with it is you don't have as many upperclassmen. At D1, this is somewhat averaged due to the losses against early entries and how hard it is to RS a top recruit.

At D2 and D3, its easier to RS a top guy, and stockpile talent, since no one leaves early unless a promise isn't kept.

When I move up, I was going to pick up a zone team and do this. With the new engine/fatigue, you could probably go 8 deep and be fine if you really wanted the top talent and was willing to take walk ons.

I understand what your saying. I'll see what happens, but it looks like I'll probably stick with filling all my scholarships.

I thought about this too. You can play an 8-9 man rotation and then always have the other 1-2 spots (players 9 and 10) in developmental roles (best at D2 and D3 where you need to give high potential guys some time to improve, but not on the court at the expense of your team).

The extra moola could come in handy during recruiting then.

Agree 100%.

with my DI schools I recruit players that I think will be able to start by their Soph season(dont nec have to but could). I wont recruit a kid just to fill a scholarship or play 8 minutes. the 15K for an open scholarship mean more in my opinion.

Disagree 100% about it being less attractive at D3. Unless you're an A-ish prestige (or furry, apparently), you aren't going to be able to pull down top-tier recruits and have any kind of battle, there just isn't enough money. Because of its scarcity, money is incredibly important in D3, and leaving an open scholarship can allow you to sneak past a better team for a recruit or pull down someone you wouldn't have otherwise been able to pull down from a bit of a distance.

I think in D3, it's better to fill all roster spots especially since battles are rare in D3. If you fill the spots, you always redshirt one of the freshmen and can really build some very highly skilled players by their senior year. In D1, there is no problem leaving one open schollie and using the extra cash to go after the studs. I actually recommend that after you have developed a good team up there. In rebuilding years, I think it's important to fill spots in D1 though just so you can stop playing those SIMAI players or crappy recruits from previous coaches.
