I was just wondering how big of an advantage you have if the recruit contacts you before the recruiting period begins.

For example, I received messages like this from 3 different recruits. How significant is the advantage I'm going to have during recruiting period? Thanks for your help.

1. I'm not sure how else to say this, but here goes - I LOVE YOU ... well, not you, but your program. I should have been at XXX all along and now I have my chance. Let's talk about it.

2. Anyways, my girlfriend is going to be attending XXX in the fall. I'd like to talk to you about playing hoops for you. Call me.

3. My best friend told me I should contact you. Anyway, here goes nothing. I just want to ball next season. Give me a ring on my mobile - I'd like to talk about any scholarships you have open.

There's no tangible advantage when they do this beyond what you see, but they're usually local kids who have transferred away from another program and they're just giving you a heads up that they're looking for a new school.

Moreover, they usually suck, so you're probably not missing much if you don't pursue them. I don't think I've ever pursued one who's contacted me b/c they've all been horrible.
