So, I called a bunch of guys and was told I was a "backup" for
many of them. Signing period just opened, and many of them are still "undecided."
it is my understanding that they will contact me if i have a shot at them, correct? How long does it normally take after signing starts?

You have to keep initiating some kind of contact with them. If you're the backup option, either you are competing against a higher Division team, the recruit is hoping to be picked up by a higher division team, you're competing against a higher Prestige team, or you are to far away and they want to stay close to home, or the reverse, you're too close and they want to get away from home.

If you are waiting for a straight dropdown, there is no need to remain in contact with the prospect. One phone call is enough and if he does not get the attention he hopes for, he will contact you. If you are trying to pulldown a recruit then that's a whole different ballgame and additional contact is obviously required.
