My case against the new HD engine Topic

I run Maryland in Allen. It's a relatively high profile program, and I've done quite well there for a long time now. I don't frequent the forums, heck I'll go days without even looking at my own Coaches Corner. But I just submitted a ticket about the new engine, and it goes something like this....

I present for you the curious case of Zachary Miller. Good ol' Zac, Senior PG, with what I would consider a very proficient defensive IQ (A), Defense rating (96), and Speed rating (98) (granted, an average athletic rating of 56), posted this last year:

Yr. GP GS MIN FG% FG3% FT% OREB REB AST TO STL BLK PF PTS
41 29 29 24.0 .424 .255 .611 0.6 2.0 3.6 2.6 1.6 0.0 1.3 6.2

Not stellar, but serviceable. You'll note the personal fouls average of 1.3. Seems the new engine has made poor Zac, well, something of a psychopath. He's fouled out of two games (of 4) with this:

Yr. GP GS MIN FG% FG3% FT% OREB REB AST TO STL BLK PF PTS
42 4 4 23.0 .520 .375 .500 0.8 1.3 3.0 1.0 1.8 0.0 4.3 8.3

FWIW, from what I can tell after almost 4,000 HD games, he has yet to play against another PG who distinctly outclasses him this season. Yet he's committed 17 fouls in 4 games (92 minutes). I won't argue the FCP wasn't too strong in the old engine. Clearly, it was a favorite for a reason. That being said, to more than triple the PF's per game, for a solid and competent player, seems rather, um, heavy handed. At best.

I'll also grant that 4 games is a very small sample. Or is it?

Has he been playing more while tired this year than last?

Of course. But that 96 stamina has so much room for improvement. If 100 is the top end of the scale, I would think he'd be able to get through 23 minutes a night (at normal or slow down) without falling all over himself.

Sorry, didn't see any reference to Stamina in the original post.

There was a known foul problem ... there was also an adjustment. Only count the games after the adjustment, which are currently the 28th and the 29th.

You are running the FCP, all game long. Your guys are going to get tired. They are also going to foul more. Both of those things happen in the FCP.

Your team committed 24 fouls on the 29th, that is normal for the FCP now ... and K-State averaged 24 fouls per game last season in Real Life ... that does not seem like it is a problem. On the 28th, your team had 27 fouls, but your team was listed as intentionally fouling ... I also do not see that has a problem.

In the 2 games since the adjustments, he (your PG) had 4 and 5 fouls. He also averaged 23 minutes per game. At the end of the game he was listed as "Fairly Fresh", he can probably play more minutes.

What you also failed to see in the last 2 games is that 2 of the 9 fouls Miller got were while your team was intentionally fouling at the end of a close game. In the first game it did not say you were intentionally fouling, but one of his fouls came with less than 3 minutes when you were down 15 points, that one might have also been intentional (though it was not listed as such).

Either way, since the adjustments, not including intentional fouls, he had 3 and 4 fouls ... and that might be 3 and 3 ... in 2 games.

Since you are running the FCP, I think you are going to find these settings are the new norm.

OK ... now a 3rd game since the update and your team was not behind. In this game you had only 16 fouls and none from Miller.

It also matters how good the competition who you are running the press on is ...
