Study Hall and Grades - A Game of Chance Topic

This was a first for me, so I thought I would share with other coaches so they never have this happen to them.

JR with an overall GPA of 2.5
0 Study Hall minutes
2.0 2nd Semester Mid-term Grade

Bump Study Hall to 10 minutes
1.9 Final Term Grade

So my player is ineligible even though I gave him study hall minutes to at least maintain his 2.0. Sent a ticket in and was told that Cumulative GPA, Study Hall, and chance are all factors in grades. Also, Study Hall shouldn't be treated like other practice categories were 3 or 7 min maintains a skill. So it seems chance won out here.

Of course this all sucks, since my kid in essence became dumber with more study hall, but a learning experience nonetheless. Lesson learned - if you really need a player bump up their study hall minutes to more than you think it should be to increase the odds that they will pass.

there is a bunch of volatility in grades - with a guy at 2.0 I tend to jump to 20 minutes of study hall ... could be that less would have worked

I wouldn't mind seeing grades and INELs disappear, personally

Thanks metsmax. This is a first for me. I've never had a upperclassman become ineligible before and I've always used the 10 min bump for 1.9-2.2 mid-terms and 15 for 1.6-1.8.

It just looks like I used the wrong formula.

NBA Dynasty is one forum over. ;-)

Yeah, definitely be careful with grades right now.

I had a guy with a 3.9 GPA in high school turned in a midterm GPA of 2.4 with 6 mins. of study hall time. In the old engine, a player with that kind of high school GPA would normally need zero minutes or possibly just 2 to 4 minutes.

I've also seen SRs and JRs having grades that are lower than I'd expect from upperclassmen.

I just had my 1st ineligible too. Did they turn it up or this just one of those things?

I think it's just your lucky year, Mike

lol so it would seem. It happened on my redshirt, too. Wth else is he doing?? I wish we could do a home visit mid-season and tell his parents on him.

yeah, sigs, that is abouthe way i thoughtit worked.

obviously, i hate to see you lose your guy, but the selfish side of me is thinking:

"boy, now im glad i have all these dudes wih 3.0+ gpas"

i tend to be bit on the safe side ;-)

but seriously, i think it was a perfect storm that hammered you on that one. my guess is that 10 min would prolly usually be good enough in that case, but once in ten times or so, it is not enough. not triyng to be an *** (it comes natural) but i prolly would have gone with 20 min.

PS i as just thinkin, maybe the "chance" is a mltiplier. so that you have the amount of minutesyou told him to study, but you never know how much of the time he is screwing off, or flirting with his tutor, or playing HD. somtimes he is only "wasting" 10% of his time. normal is maybe 20%. and your kid was jeff spicoli (90% screwing off)

Dear Mr. Vernon, we accept the fact that we had to sacrifice a whole Saturday in detention for whatever it was we did wrong. What we did was wrong. But we think you're crazy to make an essay telling you who we think we are. You see us as you want to see us... In the simplest terms, in the most convenient definitions. But what we found out is that each one of us is a brain...
and an athlete
and a basket case
a princess
and a criminal
Does that answer your question?... Sincerely yours, the Breakfast Club.
