Ace1430's 1975 Franchise Roster

Round 1(Pick 16)-When we found out we picked 16th we knew that we needed to start out with a strong franchise player. After a very difficult decision we realized Dennis Eckersley fit the bill. He offers us nearly a decade as an above average starter and the better part of another as a dominating reliever. Dennis Eckersley P

Round2(Pick33)-This was a very difficult decision made easy over the last few picks. We really wanted someone who could hold down the offense. Keith Hernandez has an OPS+ of 120 or more 6 times and will be a Average, On Base and doubles machine for over a decade. Not to mention he will provide the cigarettes.

Round 3Pick(64)-There we're a ton of players we had are eyes on, some went and some stayed, but one player was near the top of our list the whole time. Not only is this player an above average fielder, but he can really slug the ball some seasons. We are very happy to welcome our third baseman for the next 10 years, Doug DeCinces.

Round 4Pick(81)-We knew we wanted to take a pitcher and we had to change our strategy a bit, but we are very happy to add a solid 5-6 seasons from Rudy May.

Round 5Pick(112)-We had targeted Gary "Sarge" Matthews since the beginning of the draft and this just seemed like the perfect time to take him. He will be a mainstay in the middle of our line up for more then a decade. With an on base over .350 6 times and a slugging percentage north of .400 almost every season, his only downfall is his shaky defense, we are willing to to throw him out in Field and take our chances with his bat. Not to mention the incredible hat collection he will bring along with him!

Round 6Pick(129)-Once again, we decided to add to our offense. Not because our pitching is sured up, but we felt like a player or 2 we are looking at will be available next round. Therefor, we decided to take some well needed power. Please welcome Dusty baker.

Round 7Pick(160)-With pitching becoming more and more scarce by the round, we decided to take a 3rd starter. This player will be a very steady arm for the next 5 seasons and a welcome addition to our rotation. Welcome Fred Norman.

Round 8Pick(177)-Not only has pitching become scarce, but so has good middle infielders. We decided to jump on 1 of the few remaining players at shortstop who will offer a solid glove and a nice long career. We were happy to select Bill Russell SS

Oakland Earthquakes 1975 Franchise Roster

C- Brian Downing
1B- Willie McCovey
2B- Bobby Grich
3B- Aurelio Rodriguez
SS- Robin Yount
OF- Ben Oglivie
OF- Cesar Geronimo
OF- Gary Thomasson
DH- Willie Horton

C - Duffy Dyer
2B/3B/OF - Bill Stein
SS/2B/2B - Rudy Meoli
PH/1B/OF - Tom Hutton
1B/3B/OF - Mickey Stanley
OF - Merv Rettenmund

SP- Jon Matlack

SP- John Denny
SP- Vern Ruhle
SP- Woodie Fryman
SP- John Curtis
P- Tom Burgmeier
P- Dan Spillner
P- Ron Schueler
P- Charlie Williams
P- Clyde Wright

Round 1 (Pick 19) - We'd rated Robin Yount #2 overall but he turned up available at #19. There were about 10 SP who would also have been tempting, but all of them were taken, making the decision to take a 19 year old destined for 2 MVP's and the HOF even easier.

Round 2 (Pick 30) - Bobby Grich completes a solid DP combo for the next 12 years or so. Six All Star games, 4 Gold Gloves, career OPS+ of 124 in a position where quality seems scarce in the 1975 draft, so we'll lock him up early.

Round 3 (Pick 67) - The demand for starting pitchers has been fierce in the early rounds, but Jon Matlack appears to be a solid value here and should provide 7-8 good years, including real life all-star years in 75 and 76. On the Mets he was a #3 starter behind Seaver/Koosman in 75, but we're going to challenge him to think higher.

Round 4 (Pick 78) - With an 18 year career ahead of him, we didn't expect Brian Downing to be available this late in the draft. Combines good catching defense for his first several years with 10 career years of > 120 OPS+ and career OBP of .370.

Round 5 (Pick 115) - Trivia question: name a pitcher who won both the Cy Young and an ERA crown but never played in an All Star game. Answer: John Denny. He'll be a nice addition to the rotation for the next 11 years.

Round 6 (Pick 126) - A future HR king, 3 time All Star, and peak period of 4 out of 5 seasons with > 130 OPS+ makes Ben Oglivie a very nice round 6 pickup. His defense is also serviceable, and he'll produce for the next 11 seasons.

Round 7 (Pick 163) - The demand for SP continues to run high over the last 2 rounds, but Vern Ruhle fits our need for a #3 starter in 1975, plus will contribute for the next 12 years both as a starter and out of the pen.

Round 8 (Pick 174) - A pick primarily made for CF defense. We expect that all of Cesar Geronimo's ball hawking skills will be tested in support of our back of the rotation starters, which will be a team weakness. Cesar does provide a premium offensive year in 1976 and will contribute for 9 seasons. Trivia: was the 3000th strikeout victim of both Bob Gibson and Nolan Ryan.

Round 9 (Pick 211) - Another addition to our projected 5 man rotation, Woodie Fryman will give us 6 quality seasons, albeit on the back end of his career. He was also a real life all star in 1976.

Round 10 (Pick 222) - Another pick primarily for defense, Aurelio Rodriguez adds a Gold Glove winning 3rd baseman to the mix for the next 9 seasons.

Round 11 (Pick 259) - Tom Burgmeier looks to be our #1 reliever for the next 9 seasons and provides an All Star season in 1980.

Round 12 (Pick 270) - HOFer Willie McCovey needs no introduction here. He's tailing down in his career by 1975 but will still contribute for 6 seasons at 1B, including a very good year with MVP votes in 1977.

Round 13 (Pick 307) - At long last, our 5 man rotation is set with the addition of John Curtis, who will contribute for 10 seasons.

Round 14 (Pick 318) - Looking for a righty power bat here, Willie Horton fills the bill and will be our full time DH for most of the next 6 seasons.

Round 15 (Pick 355)
- Dan Spillner is added to be a jack of all trades out of the pen; long relief, some setup, occasional spot start. He'll provide 9 seasons for us, albeit some of better quality than others.

Round 16 (Pick 366) - Our RF spot looks like it will be handled by committee; with Gary Thomasson being the first one on the committee. He does provide a few quite decent offensive seasons during the 6 years he'll be contributing.

Round 17 (Pick 403) - A righty setup arm with better years in 76-78 than 75, Ron Schueler ended up in real life by retiring to become the Padres pitching coach then general manager. Maybe he can help swing us some good deals also in a few years.

Round 18 (Pick 414) - Bill Stein's value to us is his versatility over the next nine years, capable of playing all infield and outfield spots. In 75 he will be part of a right field platoon while subbing at other positions.

Round 19 (Pick 451) - Adding another fairly durable arm to the bullpen, Charlie Williams will contribute for the next four seasons.

Round 20 (Pick 462) - Another righty bat for an outfield platoon, Merv Rettenmund will provide decent part-time offensive numbers for 5 seasons.

Round 21 (Pick 499) - Our backup catcher for the next 6 seasons, Duffy Dyer provides reliable defense and decent offense for a couple of those years.

Round 23 (Pick 547) - In the final year of a nice career, Clyde Wright provides us a lefty arm and enough innings coverage in the bullpen for us to be comfortable in 1975.

Round 24 (Pick 558) - Mickey Stanley provides a right handed bat to fill in at 1B and the OF, as well as other infield positions at times over the next four seasons.

Round 25 (Pick 595)
 - Tom Hutton will be a lefty pinchhitter and part time DH against RHP, and will contribute for 6 seasons.

Round 26 (Pick 606) - Rudy Meoli is added solely to have a second player on the roster rated at SS.
