I had my first loss of ability in a player.  It happened with a freshman PG whom I had assigned 0 practice minutes in the Footwork category.  He went from a rating of 80 Defense to a rating of 79.  This player has a fairly low Work Ethic of 25.

What are the factors that cause a player to lose ability during the season?  Is there always a risk of losing ability when you assign 0 (or a very low amount of minutes) in a particular practice category?  How does Work Ethic factor in to this?  Is a player more likely to lose ability from a very high rating (such as 80) and less likely to lose ability from a low rating or mid-range rating?

Why would you not assign any minutes for a freshman? Do you not want his Defense to improve? I doubt he's already maxed  out even then you want to assign a small amount of practice time to not have any loss.

That's one of the questions I am asking: does 0 practice minutes in a particular category guarantee there will be a loss of ability in that category?  Also, will a player lose ability faster off of a highly developed ability than a very modest ability?  does Work Ethic have any effect of preventing atrophe when minutes are low or zero?

To answer your question, I wanted to concentrate on improving other categories.  Being that his Defense is very advanced and his career is very young, I am not in a hurry to improve his Defense rating, as much as some other abilities that need work.

likely to lose with zero - lose more if few mins and low WE, lose less if lots of playing time and good WE

general guideline is 7 minutes to maintain a skill rating

peri and low post can be maintained with apx 3 mins

I think that FT needs more like 8 or 9 to maintain, but others may differ

once a player hits his potential cap, some say he can then be maintained with zero - others think takes a few mins
