If you were to not play your big leaguers at all in spring training to keep them fresh and healthy, would there be any downside?

Older players, and I've only experienced it with 32+, sometimes lose a point or two in certain categories if they don't play.

Also, players in their "peak" years, can stil gain an occassional point in some categories.   ST is a good time to get that point.

so my older players will lose points. however, their golf games will improve since they don't have to come to the ballpark. i'm going to make a benefit/ consequence chart and see where that leads me.

They won't necessarily lose points.  I've had it happen.

I think the best people to play are older vets (to minimize the chance of ratings losses) and guys who are just past the age of improvement (since that becomes the only way to give them a few point bumps before they reach their true peak).

I thought that admin said there was a rust factor in the game, as well. If players don't get enough AB's or innings pitched they start off slow.

I think their "rust factor" manifests itself as a lost ratings.

Oh, okay.

so the consensus is that it's a bad damn idea.

i like to get my veteran position players (over 31) around 5-10 at bats and my pitchers 3 innings pitched or so...

ok. so they need to play, but not very much at all. a game or 2.

This is pretty much what I do too. I play my vets early so they are well rested for the start of regular season.

same here, i get all the vets time in during the first few games of the season and get it out of the way...

I give my starters two starts, relievers 6 innings, and keep the position players under 30 at bats when possible.

eeyore1959 - you mean even for your vets?  seems like a bit much...it may cause position players to fatigue earlier in the regular season, particularly if the at bats are towards the end of spring training
