I just moved up to DI and recruiting starts this evening.  I've read that recruiting is quite a bit different in DI than in DII or DIII.  Could someone inform me what type of recruits I should be targeting (expecting to land) with a D- prestige.  Is a 1 or 2 star out of reach for this program?

hmmm a 1 star wasn't, but they re-did star ratings, so now I believe it is.  Depends on if you have old or new recruits.  I would say around the top 40 players at their position are totally off limits.

I would look around 60th at their position, maybe 50-90th for my players.

Target local players.  That might be the only way you have a shot at players at your recruiting ceiling.  And by local, I mean players where HV are in the $300s.  if you have a lot of openings, like 4+, or if there aren't many players nearby, then venture out a bit farther.  And since you won't be winning many/any battles, don't plow through your budget quickly.

Not to steal the thread, but if you have a C- or C prest. school... what can you recruit star wise?

That is much much much harder to answer.  All depends on locality, need and competition.  With a C-/C I would think you could get the 30th-50th at their position players, but it depends so much on potential.  A great potential 35th player will be harder to get than a lousy potential 25th rated player.

Thought so, thanks.

How important is the locality and favorite school?  I have also jsut taken over a DI program, and have a local 5 star recruit (30 miles away) who wants to stay clsoe to home and says that my school is his favorite school ever.  Do I have any chance of signing this guy?

cj ~ Its a little important.  But a 5-star guy isn't going to a D- prestige school.  No chance.  It might get you up to a D+/C- level, but that isn't enough.

A low price for a 5 star guy might be $15-20 from a A prestige school.  That might be $40-60k for a C prestige school, and that is probably the lowest a 5-star will ever go.

I have lost battles with a B prestige team for a 5-star I spent $35k+ on.

With the first cycle being important, what type of recruiting do you prefer?  If I'm looking at 1 and 2 star players close to home, do most people throw 5 scouting trips at a time each cycle or will a couple phone calls work to feel out the player like in DIII?  I realize not everyone will want to share their recruiting technique but a few pointers would be very much appreciated.  Thanks

For low DI, avoiding battles is the most important thing. Recruiting in the first cycle is not too important. If you get listed with another school, you might have to back away, so don't spend more than you have to to get listed. With 5 openings, I would find 1-2 zero or one-star locals and spend 3-6k on them (10-20 HVs and a scholarship offer). If you are alone on them after the 1st cycle and you really like them, you can increase your investment to 10k+ so that the FSS 2am word on the street shows that your tight/high priority.
