Can anyone tell me the exact days or games needed from the beginning of the season before calling up a prospect to push back the Arb? I have heard 17, 19, 20......25 just to be safe. Is there a more definite answer. I've also been told it is just days and I've also been told games palyed. I'll be playing for my division this year and need every game. Thanks.

I believe it's 20 or 21 minor league HBD days. Minor leagues start a few HBD days later than the majors.

If it's that critical enough to your playoff chances (or whatever) that you can't ballpark 25 games and not worry about it, why are you trying to game the system? Call him up already!!

If you drop out of contention, you can always send him back down. The service time doesn't have to come at the beginning of the season.

20 days.

But the match is tricky because I believe it has to be 20 days on the active minor league schedule.  So if you start counting from the start of the major league season, which usually starts one or two HBD days earlier than the minor league season, you could get burned.

My rule of thumb: if your minor league season starts on Thursday with the AM cycle, delay the call up until after the AM cycle on the following Thursday.  Takes all the math out of play.

Keep in mind that it has to be 20 consecutive minor league days, or otherwise the minor league service time is applied to the majors.  I think its 172 service days, but there are only 176 days in the major league seasons. So if you split it up to 10 days early and 10 days late in the minors, you'll have 20 days in the minors, but still the full 176 days of major league service show up on your player.

And risk needlessly screwing yourself by incurring a demotion penalty on your prospect.

I would rather risk needlessly screwing myself out of a point here and there from a demotion penalty than needlessly screwing myslef out of a playoff spot because I waited to call up a few key pieces.

If one (or even two!) point(s) in his first ML season is going to keep him out of the HOF, I'm not sure it's worth worrying too much about his abitration years.

I'm not saying you're screwing yourself for calling him up.  I'm saying you're a dumbass for sending him back down.

What are you talking about? The OP was wondering how to postpone a year on the arb clock, while not hurting his chances for the playoffs too badly. That is the best way of doing it. Your last comment brings nothing productive to the topic.

Why am I having to explain the self-explanatory to you, strikeout?

Read iaian's quoted comment.

Your lack of reading comprehension brings nothing productive to the topic.

The self-explanatory is that the OP is worried about the arbitration years, so the guy must be decent. Also, apparently the guy is a key player in his play-off run. That is the point of the subject. So, why would he want to keep him up if he falls out of the play-off chase?

I thought it germane to the discussion, sir, to point out to the newb that if he follows iaian's advice, he would risk needlessly losing ratings of the player in question.
