Recruiting ? For DI Vets Topic

What is the most money ever spent on a recruit and not sign him?
I'm trying to get an idea of the most amount it would take to sign a top recruit as a C prestige IF he is considering me.

I've spent 50K and not signed guys.  I think more.  I'm sure folks who battle often have gone higher and lost. If you are battling a superior prestige team, you could spend 100K and not get him - if the superior prestige team is willing to spend say 50K.....of course dont forget distance effects also - its not the $ its the effort the $ buys

My Providence team spent $79k and lost a recruit to Metsmax's Maryland Knight team last season, but I'm sure there are guys who have spent more.

If you have a chance for him, go for him. But dont be stupid. Know your surroundings. Your Colgate, so you are right near Big East territory. How many scholarships do the powers around you have? You should wait to see who is going for the Center to see if you have a chance, don't waste 10,000 dollars just to be knocked off by an elite with the same amount of scholarships as you. Since you only have 3 scholarships you probably do not have much of a chance to beat any top school for the recruit so unless there is really no fight for him you don't have much of a chance.

Who knew TMac would eventually end up becoming the voice of reason?

You need to get an idea of whom others may be after but at the same time get you name on the guys first.  its a fine line I have spent 60k on a guy under 360 miles and lost.  And whenI say 60k I dont mean wasting it on calls and evals I mean I know the difference between the value of a hv and a cv and used them to the best of my ability.  I lost to a coach who by my calculations spent 80k.  GL

And particularly if you are recruiting against someone who is significantly higher than your current C prestige. Assuming comparable distance, your $60K could get beat out by a higher prestige team's $40K. Just have to choose your battles wisely and hope your fuzzy math is on target.

Great points.  I dont have enough experience to know the value of prestige in d1 but would love someone to s/m me there thoughts on it.

check back in the forums a few weeks - there was a thread that seemed to say that a full letter grade doubled the value of effort - I think that is high - but others may have studied with more precision than I have

1. compare budgets - number of schollies open but also postseason money - look at yours  and try to figure out your competitor's - you can tell by looking at last seasons results for the teams in his conference

2.  distance - distance can double or triple the cost of each effort - its the effort that matters - $ are just a way to track - but it is the effort

3.  battles - is your competition in a battle, in several?

4.  prestige - that enhances the effect of each effort - views differ - read up - it matters a lot

5. starting spots?  minutes? - can you or your opponent make promises?  if your returnees are awful - I dont mean to say they are, I mean in that case - maybe you start this freshman - its like some extra effort at low cost - but keep the promises

sort-of related question - what kind of difference is there between a C+ Div I and a A Div II?

Don't over-do the promises thing - it can be tempting, but then living up can be tough. I had to go with the substitution by minutes one season when I went a little overboard and ended up with 3 promised starts and 5 guys with promised minutes. Tough season (but we were pretty good 3 seasons later...)

assuming it has not changed, all things being equal (i.e. distance and minutes), each 1/3 of a grade is worth 1/3 the effort (or dollars on say home visits).  Of course nothing is ever quite equal & this formula is up for debate, but early in my hd career I sitemailed a bunch of hi prestige coaches who beat me out on recruits and figured the formula out.  As a programmer, there would be a linearity to the formula - right?

anyhow, as a C vs an A prestige, if the A spent 40k, the C would have to spend 160k, a B would have to spend 80k, and an A- would have to spend 53.3k to tie - all things being equal.

prestige has the same value in d3 and d2, the only difference is there is not near the money to throw around.

I'm not sure prestige-weighting-wise, but remember that the DI school gets much better NT money and an extra $10K for every open scholly.  I wouldn't bet on the Div II school there.

It still depends on the situation.  It can be pretty easy for an A+ DII school to knock of a C DI sim, as long as it isn't the Sims primary focus.
