Success vs. the Full-Court press? Topic

In DIII I have a solid team (15-4), with good ballhandler and passer ratings, but 3 out of my 4 losses have been to teams who have full-court pressing defenses. Does anyone have advice on how to strategize against the press?

You have average BH and PASS so improving those will help. You have horrible ATH/SP to go against a press. Especially the speed category is way low to be effective. The teams you lost to are not that quick but the press will eat up slow/unathletic teams and the ones you went up against are quicker than you. You will need to improve upon your ATH/SP to be more effective and also need slightly better BH/PASS as a whole.

Having said that, there are 2 things I would recommend. I would go at least 10 deep against the press and not have your guys playing so many minutes. I would also go slowdown tempo against the press to offset some of the advantage it has against you. Just my $.02.

What 1calloway said. Going to extremes ain't a bad idea but it depends on your roster and the D you run.

You may want to really s-l-o-w it down, especially if you run a zone D. But better, in my diseased brain's opinion, is get everybody on the team about equal minutes and go uptempo. Kind of a "run'em to death" strategy. Naturally this only works with deep rosters. They don't have to be great- just not walkons. But you better have IQ at least as good as your opponent and be aware 1 or 2 more free throws may occur (or 25!), so FT ratings are helpful.

If that doesn't work then recruit better players. *

I just won a game - http://www.whatifsports.com/hd/GameResults/BoxScore.aspx?gid=6023624 - that I was pretty sure I was going to lose because I have the same problem with full-court presses. And this is a *good* full court pressing team, with 5 IQs at A+ and 10 guys at B or better.

I did pretty nearly what jenningss suggested - I play a zone anyway and I tried to slow the game down as much as possible on my end. I also went pretty deep with my bench.

I think (?) it may have helped. I went on a 26 to 11 run in the last 8 minutes of the game to make up the deficit and put it away, and that coincided with the time that I seemed to have the fatigue advantage.

Of course, it's also very possible I just got lucky.

At D3, I think you need to have at least 2 of the following 3 things to beat a good press team:

1. Ath / Spd to match the press team. Since every player in D3 has weaknesses, and press teams are recruiting specifically for Ath / Spd, it's not likely this is going to happen unless you're an awesome recruiter.
2. Strong BH.
3. Better IQ's than your opponent.

Incidentally, this is also why I think it's almost impossible for young teams to beat experienced press teams, unless you concentrate all of your distro in juniors / seniors with great BH.

Update - I apparently got lucky before, and ball-handling and IQ may not do the job.

I just lost to a pressing team, that has lower IQs than the one I beat, largely because my PG went 1-for-18 with 5 TO. He'd been shooting about 50% before this game (now at .492) and he has an 80 BH (very good, I think for D3).
