In-Season Recruiting Topic

Is there anything to really do for recruiting during the season? I just realized I can see some of next year's highschoolers, but I wasn't sure if there was any point in compiling some sort of list or using FSS during the year.

Doing it when you have free time during the season really saves time when recruiting starts, especially if you have enough rollover money from last season to afford to FSS a state. I usually try to compile a list of the best local-mid range players that fit my needs so when recruiting starts I know what states I want to scout and recruits I want to call first.

At D3, how often do you use FSS? I used it to determine between the last couple of guys I was deciding on, but its pretty expensive to do more than a couple states.

One of my schools is in the middle of nowhere and most quality players for me are in the 200-300 mile range.  But my state is NY and they have a wealth of teams and recruits.  Depending on my class size, I will wait out on recruiting until the signing date.  By then, the FSS will be cheaper by a couple hundred of dollars and you would  not lose as much money when battling for recruits with unknown potential.

Even if you start a bit later, you may get lucky and complete a good  class by the following morning after the first signing date.  It worked for me a few times and I once saved over $6000 (which became $1500) after recruiting for 3 players

Riding off of Ryan, I would definitely create a list of potential players then just wait it out.

That's how I used to use FSS with the old recruit generation; now FSS is a MUST for any and all players you want. Way too many times I have bought FSS on a state just to find my favorite player is covered in low potential and now unrecruitable. This is another reason why getting together a list of your favorite prospects helps, find the 1-2 states (or more depending on size of state and money available) in which you have the most or your favorite prospects and scout them. If you really want to get into it, find the best targeted-recruits to price-ratio of each state to find the best valued state for your interests.
In DIII, coaches have begun pulling entire recruiting classes out of only 2-3 states.

As to what spsone07 said, I found out the hard way you can't wait anymore if you want the best players. Some prospects with great potential could already be available to you and battles for them will start day 1. Of course, if there's nobody you like immediately available, waiting never hurt.

at dIII you are pretty much best off(It seems to me) in new england, where there is a concentration of small states where you can piecemeal spend on FSS - rather than a big state where everythign close is all ofr nothing.

I'm new - but I use in season recruiting to fill some time - and get an idea of what I'm looking at.

when recruiting does roill around i'll do another search (never know with vision) and i'll pick 1-2 states to FSS. So far I have taken guys with slightly lower cores but high potential over guys with higher cores and low or no potential. i'm just going for growth. It shows in my team, i'm going to have 4-5 guys gains 40+ points during the season, a couple could hit 50.

I play in NY and I can really only afford FSS when I have at least a three-man class or a 2-man class but I can afford a walk-on.  That being said, it's still worth it by a mile.  Taking a guy sight unseen (potentials-wise) is pretty dangerous unless you're recruiting him as a stopgap.  I've done that, too - if you have one space open and can't afford to scout, you can take a guy with 1 year of eligibility left who can fill in for the season and then have the scholarship back the next year.

For my d3 teams in the ny pa area I usually only buy one of the 2 but get some outlying states also.  Unless its for 1 ship then its a tough call to make but i then try to stay close to home
