Does DL time count as minor league service time? Topic

I've got a player who I was planning on promoting to the ML's after 20 minor league days, but he was injured during spring training. He'll be on the minor league DL past the 20 minor league days required to delay a year of ML service. If I promote him to the ML's right after he gets off the DL, will the days on the DL count as minor league service time, thus delaying his year of ML service? Or do I have to have him be on the active minor league roster for 20 days after he gets off the DL?

If he's not on a major league roster, he's not accruing major league service time.

That doesn't answer the question the OP asked.

I need him to accrue 20 days of minor league service time. I know he's not accruing ML service time.

You are thinking of it backwards.  Technically speaking, it's not the accrual of minor league service time that delays the arbitration clock.  It's the lack of accrual of major league service time. Thus, tecwrg did answer the question (even if he didn't use your terminology).  If he's on the minor league DL, he's not on the major league roster, and he's not accruing major league service time.  Thus, you can promote him after he comes off, and you'll be fine.

The real issue is that minor league assignments of less than 20 days are considered major league service time.  So as long as he's on the minor league roster, whether on the DL or active for more than 20 days of the minor league season, he's good.
