What would the benefit of not using a closer be?
The biggest benefit is not wasting innings. The more innings in general you can get from the better pitchers, the more you'll win.
I have to admit, I'm not a closer believer to begin with. It's the only position in baseball that's created and used on the basis of a
statistic.
When you're up 3 runs, why waste innings using an elite pitcher? On the other hand, if you need the elite pitcher in the 6th, why save him to potentially "close" a game when you can use him to stop the biggest threat in the game.
No question, I'd use your guy as setup A with as high a pitch count as you can to get max inning out of him.
