Why is this guy playing so bad? Topic

Anyone have any ideas why the player below is playing so poorly (I know his salary is too high)? Is it just a long slump? He pitched 15 innings during the preseason with a 0.00 ERA so I thought he would do well this season - he has done well other seasons at other clubs, although I have more of a hitter's park. Did I overuse him during the preseason (what is overuse by the way?). Although his stats are better than many of my other pitchers he is doing substantially worse.

hmm, bad luck and small sample size? with no unearned runs hard to blame defense, that's a huge jump in ERA.

GB/FB ratio-- 39.   That's not good.  And if his highest pitches are 71 and 67... more often than not, he'll get hit pretty hard.

I don't think his ratings explain it. I have other pitchers with worse rating who are doing substantially better. In addition, his statisitics this year are MUCH worse than previous years.

He should be doing better.   Small sample size.

I would agree with small sample size at this point.  He has a good history.

"GB/FB ratio- 39.   That's not good.  And if his highest pitches are 73 and 71"  --- Fixed...

Also you are playing in H-A-R-T-F-O-R-D...
Coupled with that gb/fb ratio weak v R and pitches he will have a mid 4s era at best...
Also his 1st win was giving up 8 earned 9 hits in a game at Coors...
It will average out over the course of the season but he wont have a sub 4 era in that stadium.

my humble opinion not a ground ball pitcher in a hitters park...and probably weak D.

I've got a guy similar to that (but a few points less on pretty much everything except GBFB, so an slightly worse player), who has a career 5.29 ERA.  I wouldn't expect greatness.  Frankly, I can't believe he's done as well as he has... Are those pitching parks he was in?  Maybe in a weak NL?

His control is great, which should benefit you in  a hitters park and his velocity is good too. His splits, although favoring vL, are pretty good but not great. With his low GB rating in a hitters park he will give up more HR's than you would like and his not so great pitches are going to keep him from being too successful. What is your defense like? I have similar or worse pitchers than this who have never had an ERA above 4 pitching in a neutral park (Little Rock) with pretty decent defense. An improvement there might be the answer, or maybe just a higher PC C, although I don't really follow the high PC C theory myself.

If you plan on remaining in Hartford, I would try to trade the guy and get some value out of him.... +4/+4 in HR (and + across the board for hits) is not going to work well with a Fly-Ball pitcher.

I agree. Look at his home/away splits. Away his HR/9 is identical to his career avg of around 1.2, at home it has almost doubled. His peripherals Away are close to his career norms, but they pop at home. I'd either try to trade for value or try to manipulate your rotation to minimize home starts.
