why do that? then they are making the BL min. for the following year. Sept. call ups don't suffer a demotion hit.

I think I  read somewhere that you can demote them to the minors as soon as the minor league season is over without a penalty.  I demote all my call-ups to AAA before rollover to save salary and I have never seen a demotion hit.

Anyone you call up that you do not intend to have on your ML roster next season, send them back down to the MiL as soon as the regular season ends. No demotion penalty. As wilhitec said, why in the world would you want to pay AAA players the ML minimum to play in the minors? It's a total waste of money.

The question is is there any risk of a demotion penalty for players that were brought up before roster expansion?  I have a couple players that came up as injury replacements during the year.  They are marginal ML guys, and may or may not end up in the bigs for me next year.  I'd like to demote them in case they end up staying in the minors next year so that they are cheaper, but they weren't September callups.  Am I risking a demotion hit if I send them to AAA?  My ML and AAA seasons are over.

In my experience so far, it hasn't mattered when they were called up - so long as they are going up and down to the BL and not demoted among the minors.

I demote as many players as I can after the season to give me flexibility and have never seen a demotion penalty even with players that were called up before roster expansion.
