At DIII, ineligibles can play immediately. At DII, they sit a year and then automatically have 4 years of eligibility as long as their GPA is above 2.0. At DI, they sit a year then play 3 more seasons. They may play a 4th season (Sr/5) if their cumulative GPA is at or above 2.7 but it is the player's option. There is a small chance the player will become eligible during recruiting or between signing and the start of the season.

The player cannot practice with the team so put all practice minutes into SH. Also be aware that the season after he sits out, he will expect playing time as if he were a true Soph.

Also there is a chance he never shows up which is very frustrating.  They may choose to go to a Juco instead and you wasted your money. You will start next season with considering credit, but what always happens to me is a D1 team seems to swoop in and take him as a sophomore transfer and then I never get him.

That is the big risk in going for an ineligible

However, if you start with recruiting credit, is the mileage from his original hometown? Or, is it from the location of his JUCO?  It used to be from the college location but I seem to remember a change

They don't always come back for a 5th year in div II. I had one decide it was 'time to move on' because he expected a bigger role, although he averaged 20mpg that season and didn't come back to his 5th year. Didn't transfer, he was just done.

Did he at least say he was taking his talents to Europe or the D League or something?

Does the player cannot practice part apply to D3?

No, they are regular players at div 3.
