Will this guy hit in the bigs? Topic

He has hit at every level, but his contact rate and eye are so low.  His vR and VL and good, and his push/pull tendency is awesome, as are his bunting, speed and baserunning skills.  Is it worth giving him a shot as my CFer, or should I explore free agency?  Cost control is nice, but I have plenty salary left.

he's a bench player at best, probably not even that.

With that defense and speed and baserunning he could definitely help most BL teams.

I would explore free agency, but keep this guy on board as a defensive replacement/backup.  I think he might be OK as a bench player, although he'd probably be very bad at the plate.

He'll hit relatively poorly, but is still an adequate option for CF.

He's a big leaguer.  But if he's getting 300 AB, you've done something wrong.

If you're looking for a good defensive CF to bat 8th or 9th, sure.  Go for it. Anything more, and I'd look elsewhere.

Incidentally: "his push/pull tendency is awesome".....?  I have no idea what you mean by this.

0 = dead pull hitter
100 = goes the opposite way more than Tony Gwynn and John Olerud combined.

I fail to see how any particular rating could be desirable.

Maybe I am wrong-headed about this, but I work under the assumption that a dead-pull hitter is more limited at the plate, an inferior hitter to someone who is capable of using the whole field.

At any rate, in the context of this player, I'd rather have a slap hitter who goes the other way than one who is looking to pull the ball.  I don't know, like I said, I might be thinking of this all wrong.

Thanks for all the advice.  In another post someone linked to a player with a contact rating of 1, but a batting eye in the upper 80s and solid vR and vL numbers; that guys is a 280 hitter in the major leagues (I think, I need to look at him again).  Any reason to think this guy might be a 260/300/340 hitter?  Is that completely terrible for a defensive CFer?  Is it unrealistic to think he might hit 260?  A 300 OBP is not ideal, but batting in front of the pitcher might help him a bit.  Does any of this seem possible, or is he just an unmitigated disaster?  Fourth outfielder?

He'll hit .240 with no walks or power.

I have used guys like this as my 25th man if my starting CF isn't a Gold Glove, because he's both the defensive replacement at CF and the primary PR.  Miguel Ruiz is a grossly similar player, although his offensive "strengths" are different from Guillen's; the base-running and fielding stats were useful my your bench.  But MikeT23 is right.

Alright, backup it is!  Thanks.
