I've never played at D2 before, and I have a quick question.  It seems pretty clear to me that I need to start (on my Hawaii Pacific team):

PG - Bober
SG - Eaton
PF - Moore
C - Stillman

My question is concerning my starting SF.  I'm trying to decide between Carpenter and Gurley.  Carpenter would almost definitely be a more effective scorer and has a somewhat substantial edge when it comes to IQ.  They look fairly equivalent defensively to me.  The real question is how much of a difference Gurley's 50 rebounding would make for my team and whether I need that help on the boards with the bigs that I have.  In the past this team has played a motion offense and press/zone defense.  I'm thinking that with the overall lack of speed on this team I'm going to drop the press and just play motion/zone.  Any thoughts on that and how it might impact my starting SF decision?  Thanks.

I would run Carpenter just for the sake of IQ and be very happy with a solid backup also.

You're right about rebounding.  With Moore and Stillman starting, you won't need much help from the SF spot.  Those guys are board beasts.  I would start Carpenter based on IQ.  However I might play him at the 2 spot and play Eaton at 3.  I run motion too, and I like my SG to have a good passing rating.  You can mess around with it for a few games and see what works.

Yeah, that passing makes me nervous too, but I'm also pretty concerned about starting a player with 53 speed at SG even after we drop the press.

By far, Carpenter because of his Speed, Def, BH, and Passing. I'm at Shepherd College (D11, Allen World) and play a Motion/Man. As far as IQ, Carpenter also. A-/A- compared to B-/C+. As far as the Press question, before coming to Shepherd, I was at Nazareth College (D111, Allen World) and played a Motion/Press. Speed is importnat, but one thing people forget about with Press, is Stamina. Your Stamina seems OK, Speed is OK-but not great. I think it's your Def IQ where your having problems. The levels are on the low side for every level. Seniors should be A/A+ and yours are A-, Juniors should be B+/A- and your at B, and your Sophmores should be B-/B and your at C+. I would pick one Defense, and than put more minutes into the Defensive area of your Practice Plan.

Yeah, the previous coach apparently only practiced 15 minutes on each defense.  I figured I could up it to 20 or even 25 for a year and still have spare minutes to put into improving my guys' skills.

I use to go the standard 20 minutes each, Off & Def my first couple of seasons (I'm in season 13 now), but than somewhere around my 3rd or 4th season I up it to 22 minutes for each and it definitely helped. The last 3 seasons I have been going to 24 minutes each and it's helped even more. I wouldn't go anymore than that though. You want to save some minutes for the "Infamous, completely out of the blue, Low MidSeason or Final Grade".
