Odd. Things like that should never happen.

While I disagree that 1 game is cause to assume the sky is falling, I do think that there are waaaay too many 90+ defensive players in D1.  It's not at all out of the realm of possibility to have an entire squad of what should be considered elite defensive players.  They should do some tweaking and have more average defenders so there's a noticable difference when you do have to go against a 90+ guy.

Here is the game in question:  http://whatifsports.com/hd/GameResults/BoxScore.aspx?gid=6334982

Gertz for Kentucky puts up 21.  50% from the field and behind the arc.  Goes to the line 12 times.  All of this while being guarded by a player with better speed and athleticism (only by a few points, but still), and a defensive rating of 94.  Oh and also, he was being double teamed.  How does this happen?

Justa note. . since the fifty percent from behind the arc is 1 of 2, I'm not entirely sure THAT is relevant.  I mean, if it was five of ten, or even three of six. . but one of two?

Also. . .eight of his twelve free throws were on intentional fouls at the end of the game.

Also add that some of those shots were made against Lombardi, the backup SF. . . who Gertz is WAY faster and more athletic than.  Your starter didn't share the court with Gertz the whole game.

he wasn't double teamed, and he scored a third of his points on intentional fouls

Indeed ... Gertz scored 3 points against Lombardi (before you started fouling) and 7 points off Intentional fouls.  So he scored 11 (possibly) against Willie Johnson (if you don't have Johnson listed to play as a backup at any other position).

By my count, Gertz shot 4/7 against Johnson, but that included a tip in, and he had another basket that resulted from an excellent pass. If we are to believe the PBP, Gertz was responsible for beating Johnson on 2 out of 5 times. Also, he was not fouled by Johnson until the intentional fouling began.

Among the other things mentioned, there is also an IQ difference between Gertz (B+) and Johnson (B-)

i think we can file this under "not an issue"

IQ and stamina.  Stamina shouldn't play a large role but it does too much in HD.  4 points at halftime.  A tip in to start the 2nd half, several fouls drawn against a backup (stamina).

Ok, ok, I'm wrong.  In all honesty, I do not read the PbP.  I don't have the time, and I don't care all that much.  All I know is I set it to double team when leading scorer, and my goal was to shut him down.  I did not.  My bad here.

Really ... you didn't have time to read the Play-By-Play, but you had time to come to the forums and post the initial comment that Gentz beat your best defensive player?

For the record, Gentz only became the leading scorer in the second half with 04:51 left when Richard Lovell substituted out of the game ... You started intentionally fouling at 1:44, so you were double teaming Gentz, at most, for 3:07.  during that time he was 1-2.

It takes all of 10 seconds to come onto a forum and post something.  It takes decidedly longer than that to read the PBP...and much longer to actually dissect it.

Gentz, minus the free throws for intentional fouling, actually looks like he had a subpar game.  In fact, it looks like either his worst or second worst game once you account for free throws shot off of intentional fouls.
