Check this guy out: http://www.whatifsports.com/HBD/Pages/Popups/PlayerProfile.aspx?pid=2579522. Check his regular season stats against his playoff stats. Anything strike you as bizarre? Anyone have or seen a player who just can't perform come the post season? Is it programmed into the player?

Really complaining about ONE START? The problem is your sample size. Twice during the regular season this pitcher gave up 6 ER or more, just unlucky.

I think he was refering to his 11 career postseason starts, rather than just the most recent one...

It's still small sample size and just bad luck, but wow - pretty extreme.

Damn, I thought someone made a thread for me! ;-)

How did I know "small sample size" would get uttered, like the tired, over used mantra that it is. Congrats on using your first post for a "small sample size" fail. Yes, you will notice that over four playoffs he's been extremely ineffective as compared to his regular season. Since he's never had a stretch of 11 regular season starts that matches the crapulence of his 11 start post season career, and has actually been consistent in his playoff suckage, I'm thinking it's more than luck. What? I dunno.

Okay, if you aren't willing to accept SSS (for reasons I can't comprehend, nor do I care to), how about better competition?

Playoff teams are better, so they are tougher to beat.

If a guy has a flaw (only 3 pitches, none of them outstanding... for example) playing against top competition will magnify it.

Thats how I see it too iain. His pitches are pretty unimpressive. That said I would be frustrated with him too.His regular seasons stats are very impressive,He should be better than that.

He's an excellent pitcher.  It's only bad luck.

Operator error.

He's playing in Canada
He's not breathing from his eyelids.
His parents hate him. It's obvious, if they named him Royce Tannehill.

Here's another angle.   Gehrig appears to have a lot of have nots.  Assuming just half of his starts come against them, his stats will be inflated.  Beyond that, I assume he has a low pull rating(he's a stud in the regular season so why not?).   He has a mediocre GB/FB rating.   Therefore, when he's facing better competition in the playoffs, he's giving up homers at a ridiculous rate(15 in 53 innnings) and not getting pulled quickly enough.

I'd recommend changing his pull ratings in the playoffs.   He's going to give up a homer.   Stop it at one.

For the record, I think 53 innings is a SSS but that was obviously unacceptable to the OP.   However, like a RP, you can look at individual outings and determine if he's been consistently effective with a bad outing wrecking the totals.  He hasn't.   He's been consistently ineffective and I think it's due to better competition, a low pull rating and a propensity for giving up the long ball.

Mike... just say that I'm right, and be done with it.

People don't understand why SSS against better competition produces poor results.    Once a guy says "I don't accept SSS even if it is a SSS", you have to go a little deeper.   And I don't buy the "weak pitches" argument.  This guy http://www.whatifsports.com/HBD/Pages/Popups/PlayerProfile.aspx?pid=585280 does well enough with similar pitches.  He just doesn't give up a homer for every 10 outs.
