in my experience - it doesn't mean very much.  the probation is generally short and the worst consequence is your reputation suffers, which means you can't get many other jobs until it improves (which takes a while)

If you get fired shortly after you're on probation, that would suck.  If you're in D1 you might have to drop back to D3 because nobody would want you with a poor reputation.  I therefore believe that it is better to do your sleaziest recruiting in your first or second year at a school.

Sometimes, probation includes a post-season ban but  I haven't seen that in awhile. In that case, the team is seeded #6 in the CT and loses the first round by forfeit

The AD writes you a letter telling you that you can't rescind scholarships, that you must fulfill player minutes promises, no more booster assistance in recruiting and so on. I don't know what would happen if you disobeyed on any of those requests but considering your reputation and loyalty go down to a D grade I suppose a failure to abide the AD's requests could lead to a dismissal but I am not sure of that. I just finished my probation period with Ole Miss, it was a bad move to cheat with my team as I didn't land the guys and I really would of benefitted from cutting a player or two that I tossed on my team two seasons back out of frustration when I ran out of money and lost out on the players I wanted.

I means you are likely stuck at that team for a while ... because with a "Poor Reputation", you will likely not be able to get a new job with any teams except Div-III.

It takes 2-3 seasons to get your reputation back up ... if you were the one found offering booster gifts that is.
