I am looking to extend contracts of a few players. A couple players want one year deals but I want to keep them longer. I was wondering what peoples experience was with giving longer contracts for less per year are. For example is it possible to sign someone looking for $4.4 for one year to a 3 year $2 Million or someothing similar.

No.   The total will have to be their yearly average.     i.e. if a player asks for 4m, you can give him 3/4/3/5/5 in most cases so that it's 5/20.

You can't reduce the yearly salary to lengthen a contract, but you can increase it to shorten the term.

Player wants 2 years @ $4M per season, you can get him for 5 years @ $4M per season or 1 year @$8M.
