D-/D- starter at SS? Topic

Anybody ever used a 3B ranked D-/D- at short as your starting SS? Think the extra errors would outweigh the extra 100 points in slugging pct over the other possible player? Specifically I'm comparing 2000 Chipper Jones and 2005 Jeter.

Chipper is D-/D- (.879/3.77) and has an OPS# of .938
Jeter is A-/B+ (.979/5.31) and has an OPS# of .816

Short answer - it's not that close, go with Jeter.

Long answer - given about 600 chances in the field, Chipper will make about 72 errors and Jeter about 12. Given Chipper's range I would expect about 30-40 minus plays as well. So that's 90-100 bad plays right there that Chipper makes. Plus there is an unquantifiable impact on DPs that Jeter will turn that Chipper won't.

Given 600 PAs, the edge Chipper has in OPS (0.122) will get you about 72 extra bases. It's not a slam dunk for Jeter but I think Jeter is worth about 30-40 bases (8-10 runs) more. Now granted he also costs a lot more. But remember, those 100+ bad plays from Chipper mean that you have to draft more innings since your pitchers won't get off the field.

Also, isn't the 20 game rule in effect for secondary positions? Jones only played 6 games at SS, and best I can recall there's a rule in the SIM about players who played fewer than 20 games at a position being penalized.

That's already taken into account when you see the rating.

Thank you all.  I'm definitely going with Jeter.

This will be the first and probably last time I ever recommend using Derek Jeter as your SS.

You do it, you'll be sorry because just as it was noted, not only will Chipper's fielding and minus plays kill you insofar as giving up more runs, it'll also tax your pitchers which is significant, especially if you, like I often do, draft high quality expensive starters whom you are counting on for a certain number of starts.

How was Jones even an option??

I've used Ed McKean as my ss a number of times. Works best with Tulowitski as a defensive replacement/pinch hitter. A lot of errors to be sure but when I use him I usually try to have a good defensive 3b and 2b.
