Giving an international player a MLB contract Topic

The only thing I can figure that you lose by giving an international prospect a MLB contract is his options contract starts early so if he takes longer then 3 seasons to bring up to the majors he can't bounce between majors and minors - is that correct and is there any other downside to giving an international prospect a ML contract?

He also takes up a spot on your 40.

I've never tried it, never had the chance, but I assume you could try to sneak him thru the reversable waiver period.  If he sneaks thru waivers, you can take him off the 40 man roster, and have him progress on your own timeline, vs having to be in the show after 3 seasons.

I've offered MLB contracts to minor leaguers a few times and I haven't had to add the player to my 40 man.  Here's an example.

Hardball Dynasty – Fantasy Baseball Sim Games - Player Profile: Toby Park

I signed him to a MLB contract last season and never had him on my 40.

sounds like a bug to me

I wonder if that happened because he was an unsigned draft pick the previous year.

Not signed as an IFA.  Not the same thing.

They don't have to be in the majors after 3 seasons.  I have lots of guys in the minors with no options left.

HBD is not quite like MLB with its treatment of minor league options.

Yeah, I wish they would force people to "assign" players without options to the minors, resulting in most of  them hitting waivers.

One thing I am curious about - does a MLB contract help sign a prospect, other than the extra 1m or so he might have because of the 327k salary for three years?  If I offer a MLB contract with a 12m bonus, is he more likely to take it than a milb+STI with 13m bonus?  If so, how much higher would the bonus have to be before the minor league deal is more attractive for him?

Does the MLB contract make them eligible for arbitration after their 3rd pro year (not MLB year)?

No, only burns option years.
